Call J.B. at Co-Race and he can give you all the gearing and jetting information you need. 303-781-4483
The track is around 5/8 mile and has to be one of the best sprint tracks you can ever get to drive. Turn one is great fun, flat out into it, decreasing radius and banked. How big are your cohones? Somewhere in there you have to brake. How far you go in is up to you. Mess up and all that happens is that you get to clean the dirt and weeds out of your kart.
The track is very safe. No poles, fences or other objects to hit. There is very good seperation between sections of the track so there is no danger of hitting another kart who has taken an off track excusion. Several elevation changes, a good mix of high speed and low speed corners, a track owner who gives a rats pattootie, what more can a racer ask for?

I think my DRACK has the distance a little shorter, but then again my memory might be the thing that is shorter! Only problem with CRE is pit setup, track width, and lack of a long straight. Other than that, as Doug pointed out, it's a good fun safe track. And the owner is doing a lot as often as he can to improve it.

John,
I would suggest you start around a 1.70. The track is 1/2 mile long, and is fun to drive on. If you are used to racing at Sandia, you will find the lack of passing areas a little frustrating. The pits a designed for the IKF of the 1980's (a bunch of 10x10 spots). The perimiter of the pits are the only reasonable pit spots, but if more than 25 people show, those spots are all gone. Luckily, if you are going for the IKF races, they usually only have around 10 karts total, with maybe 20-25 showing up for SKUSA races. |

Jon,
What Russ failed to mention is that CRE is a dedicated KART track and not a short superbike roadcourse or an SCCA sports or vintage car race track that so many of todays Colorado kart racers are familiar with until they go out in to the real world to compete at similiar SPRINT tracks on the Promoto or Grandnational tour. The championship events are held at facilities in Camby,Or.,Phoenix,Az.,Santa Maria,Ca.,Las Vegas,Nv.,Marshalltown,Ia.,Quincy,Ill. just to mention a few.
Its unfair to compare apples and oranges.......a true kart pitting area isn't the same as a paddock at a sportscar or stockcar track just by the nature of the vehicles and the event.Single kart pit spaces are 10' x 20' at CRE which is generous by national KART track standards.Vehicles and small trailers are not allowed in the infield section of the pits that are reserved for single kart teams for obvious safety concerns.
I'm not quite sure where Russ gets his numbers for participation at our IKF events since he has failed to participate in or support the effort at CRE to build the decent racetrack that he has mentioned he longs to see in Colorado in previous posts. Our IKF program is developing on schedule and the 01 SKUSA turnouts have been good [38-45].Russ we have a great Masters class........why don't you come support it?
Jon........come on down, you will enjoy a new karting experience and have a great time!!!!!!!!!
Thanks............George/CRE-MSP |

George,
Sorry you took such offense. I think your track is one of the most fun to drive that I have been to. (FYI I have been and raced at Canby, Phoenix and Vegas). I applaud you efforts to make improvements at the track, and I know that it takes a great deal of money which many track owners seem unwilling to do.
As for participation, your right I was shooting from the hip, and I was wrong especially with my IKF numbers. Here are the actual numbers
IKF 4/29 22karts 8 classes largest class 4 karts.
IKF 5/12 22karts 8 classes largest class 5 karts.
IKF 5/26 29 karts 10 classes largest class 5 karts.
IKF 6/10 20 karts 11 classes largest class 4 karts
IKF 6/24 22 karts 12 classes largest class 3 karts.
IKF 7/8 18 karts 10 classes largest class 3 karts
IKF 7/22 20 karts 10 classes largesst classs 3 karts
Skusa 5/27 27 karts 7 classes largest class 7 karts.
Skusa 6/9 27 karts 8 classes largest class 5 karts.
I think what these numbers demonstrate is typical of a big problem in karting. There are enough participants to have good racing, but way too much dilution because of too many classes. I am looking at finding a new class for my 8 year old, but there are so many classes, and I am so stupid, that I can't even understand the difference.
Jon, with all this said, I would really encourage you and all the other people from NM to make the trip up to CRE for the SKUSA race on 9/30 it is a really fun track, the facility is very clean and I think you'll find it worth your time.
George, why don't I support the IKF 125 masters...I am just not a supporter of the IKF, I am not a member of the IKF...and I am just too slow to be competitive anyway.

Hey Russ,
I believe George's program does support the Masters class. JB Olmstead runs in that class if I'm not mistaken and holds the track record for the class too. I also recall seeing Paul Scarberry listed in that class last time he ran in an IKF event @ CRE.
Hell, Russ, you can't be that slow, either!
I'll second your suggestion to Jon. - Pack you're stuff, get your buddies and come on up. It's a nice track. Very challenging.
I'd recommend a making a weekend of it. Come up on a saturday so you have plenty of time to test your setup. Bring plenty of spares - nearest kart shop is IMI (1.5 hrs north)

Russ,
Thanks so much for your kind words and endorsement.........I can't say that I heard them the first time around.
If you have visited Camby,Phoenix and Las Vegas , all dedicated kart racing facilities then you surely understand the difference in a kart pit/paddock area and the paddock area at Second Creek,Sandia,Willow Springs and other sportscar facilities and can tolerate the limitations of a dedicated karting facility.
I appreciate the fact that you took the time to visit our website to update your facts on our 01 IKF partipation numbers.Given the state of karting in Colorado I am satisfied with the progress that we have made in trying to bring a nationally IKF sanctioned facility to Colorado and we are going to stay the course.
You still have some homework to do on the SKUSA numbers, you are not even close.
I can truly understand your concern for an over proliferation of classes in one division........but once again the numbers that you have stated are miss leading because our program encompasses all three divisions;six four-cycle,four two-cycle and six gearbox.Thats hardly an over proliferation in one program.I've been involved in kart racing for over twenty-two years and I truly beleive that there is a place in the sport for all three divisions. Its ludicrous for anyone to believe that their personal choice is the only choice. But then you mentioned that you looking for ANOTHER new class for your eight year old???
I learned long ago that there are no perfect organizations run by men......we must therefore deal with the cards and programs that we've been dealt and work to make them better.
I would ask for your continued support if you truly desire that decent karting facility that you've spoken of....its only through the support of the racing community that it can come about.
I sincerely apologize if in someway I insenuated that you where stupid......I know better.

George,
Your right again, missed a few classes
5/27 41 karts 10 classes
6/9 35 karts 9 classes
On the other point, I am not trying to create a new class for my 8 year old, I am just trying to decide what type of class to move him into. I would like him to move into a resticted class where he could race with 10 kids +. If we still lived in California the natural choice would be Jr1 2-cycle (Comer 80 motor). In colorado they don't exist, and we won't learn anything racing by ourselves or with one other kart. I don't know squat about briggs motors, but I know there are multiple classes for Jr's. At some point in time, or in some parts of the country this might make sense because there are so many participants, it just seems that around here the kids might be better to have one big class of 8-10 rather than 3 or 4 classes of 2-4.
Just my opinion. |

Thanks for the encouragement! We are going to come up on the Saturday 29th Sept. but I notice that there is an IKF race that day, does this mean we won't be able to practice?
Also I heard at The Quad regional that there is a lot of cheating in S3 in the Mountain region I hope that this was just an off hand comment and doesn't represent the region as a whole.....any comments? |

We have been to all those facilities and almost without question you can get a decent size trailer in/near the pit spot. Even the interior ones. Which was what my remark concerning the pits related to. I hauled an 8x16 pace trailer to every pacific pro-moto last year as well as world finals and supernats, and cre and imi. While the perimeter pits at CRE are getting more plentiful, spacing should be made for the interior ones to get a trailer into it. ala Phoenix, or OMC. As the program grows so will the need to support racers who don't necessarily pit out of their pickup. I appreciate everything George is doing and realize everything costs money. Just wanted to clear up my point on the pits.

IIRC there is IKF on Saturday and SKUSA on Sunday? I might be mistaken. I don't know of any cheating in S3 or any other class for that matter. I've heard "discussions" over rules interpretations in another class, and a rumor that someone had an illegal motor in the same class. But all in all, I think it's just that, rumors. I don't do tech and haven't seen it done at CRE or IMI in quite some time, so I could be mistaken, but I doubt it. Pretty decent group of folk.

Cheating is S3? Wonder who broadcast that little bit of info?
The only instance of "cheating" in that class I recall was at the 2nd Creek race where an s3 guy had an illegal carb on a new motor.
He disqualified himself voluntarilly.

Jon,
You will probably have a few hours of daylight left to practice after the IKF event is over.
Unless the weather goes in the crapper, or a ton of people show up to race, things will be pretty much wound down by 3:30 - 4:00.
Another thing: If you haven't made arrangements for somewhere to stay (unless you're camping), a motel near the track offers a racer's rate. At least that's what George told me. Contact him for details.
Oh! And because it was shared with me like this, you are going to love turn 1. Doug Welch described it to me as a real "Test of Manhood". The chicane/final turn will also show you what kind of stuff you're made of.
