How many people plan on running G2 (Heavy) class?
I'm trying to talk the parents until going to the US Amatear Nationals in October.

Gary,
The SKUSA office should be able to tell you how many registered there are. I can tell you that in my home region (Mountain) I think there are 3 active G-2's. Preston Newberry is by far the fastest of the three. I have also done a few races in the mission region and they don't even run the class. From the looks at the results in the varios regions, it looks like there is pretty low participation across the board. As a comparison, the G-1 class in both the mountain and mission region seems to be one of the largest. I am guessing if you are asking your parents regarding participation you probably haven't reached 35 years old yet (at least I hope not).

Russ,
I haven't reached the age of 35 years. Still have 15 years until I reach it.
I'm just a tall guy, almost 6'7".

That's good news. I'm just starting, and was wondering if I should do partial season of Rotax or some such, or jump right to G2. I'm in Seattle, and I'm planning to start competiing at the next Wenatchee race. I'm taking classes from Chris Knight in Portland, and then going to Bondurant Super Kart for some more seat time. At 6-4, 260 lbs and 39, I'm at somewhat of a disadvantge in the regular classes.

Dave,
Rotax Max. It has the grunt to pull you out of the corners. I`m fifty pounds over minimum weight and have been competitive with the guys that have to add weight. I qualified within 3 or 4 tenths of pole at Irwindale. There will also be two more classes added next year, Jr. Rotax Max and Rotax Max Heavy.

Thanx Pete. After talking to a couple of Rotax racers who were also spectating at Pat's this weekend, I'm inclined to do just that. It's a relatively low cost of entry (I'm buying everything from scratch) and provides a matched competitive field. In the Northwest, I'm told that there are 20 to 30 Rotax entries per event, and the KTs and HPVs are almost dead. Eventually, I'll go the 125 shifter route, but until I get some more seat time the the Rotax seems to make the most sense. I did hear today that there will be a "heavy" class next year.
The only negative thing I hear about the Rotax, is the sluggishness off of sharp corners, due to the gearing. I hear the heavier one is, the worse it is. Still though, seems like a good way to learn kart racing.

| I think as a beginner that Rotax is a great way to go. I wish it would have been around 3 yrs ago when I started. If you want to Race you might find that the Rotax classes are smaller down here in Portland and at the Skusa events. Good luck to you whichever route you go. |

Gary O,
I am hoping to run at Soth Bend as a G2. We will see how they are going to check the driver weights, 'cause I am borderline. Hope we have someone to race with...
