I'd go 1 further, Marc.....even 4th to 5th on the trx is too big of a jump. You really end up with a 4speed with two overdrives!!! Ours was able to run right with a Swedetech CR250.....thru the first 4 gears!!!! Rolling Eyes

The 450 has a wider powerband and can make peak hp at a higher rpm and also rev higher than a CR250...with the right work done to it. Problem is the reliability issues. More power, more revs, less reliability......sound familar?? Ours peaked at 9400rpm and carried the power to over 11K with only a 1hp drop. peak torque was 36ft lbs with a very wide flat-topped curve.

Mitchell, many of the parts in the 450 and 250 trannies are interchangable, in fact you can drop a complete CR250 tranny into the 450 cases.

The 450 has some incredible performance potential, but at this point the CR250 would probably be our engine of choice. Readily available, relatively cheap, parts are no problem (I waited almost 3 months for a case half for our 450 this summer!!! Twisted Evil ).

^^^ I wouldn't.. the gearbox from 5th to 6th makes 6th gear useless. You are better off with the CR and using the 5-speed.... the CR250 can be made to have a pretty broad powerband - with more torque than the Rotax 257.

Agree and disagree .....
I would NOT use the stock gear set ... Wink

Yes, 5th and 6th would have to be aftermarket.

I have an 86 TRX in the garage, according to DDR it would need late model CR parts/jug to make it competitive..........thats why it STILL sits in the garage!

interesting to know the tranny parts are interchangable...i never really took a good look at them...but all of my knowledge was based on the dirtbike riding itself, not karts. I had just always prefered the 250 over the 450 becaus eit was easier for me to tune and i liked the feel of the 250 more than the 450. both are great bikes and engines, but i also kicked my friends ass, and i beat a raptor 660r(i was redlined in 2nd, he was swtiching into 4th)....this is why i have alot of faith in the 250...all engines were stock to my knowledge though....the raptor had a pipe and i had on a pipe thatw as worse than the stock pipe(the cr250 stock pipe is better than most aftermarket pipes...only the fmf sst pipe surpasses it and maybe a few others...but the FMF SST pipe is the ebst on the market..and along with the iCAT...way way faster, engine runs cooler, and much faster with a lil more over rev...i think the site is iCATusa.com) but any search 4 iCAT should find it).

For those of you out there who are in the process of putting together an FE or IC/E kart, I have engines (257 Rotax, Honda 4TRX 250R, and TZ 250) available.

In addition, I have 7 sets of tubes bent up for our Cobalt chassis at this time, and will take custom orders beginning this month. This is the same chassis Kyle Martin drove to the win at Laguna last year in the IC/E class with the 450 CRF engine, he was quite impressed with the package (See his coments in Super Kart Illustrated).

Rick, the person responsible for the manufacture of the GAS GAS 250 is Manfred Wittenborn. Mr. Wittenborn was here in Calgary yesterday and is now on his way to San Francisco. He is actively looking for a US importer for his engine that will promote and market his product. From my understanding, Mr. Wittenborn received raw castings for crankcases from GAS GAS and together he and GAS GAS came up with a specific ICE cylinder that does not require tuning or porting. The crankshaft and transmission are also specific for ICE applications. Together, this engine should be a more racer friendly package than any other 250cc single cylinder engine available today due to it's specific design for karts. PM me for Manfred's contact information, I know he wants to provide whatever assistance he can to promote his product on this side of the pond.

at current Euro-USD exchange rates, the GasGas 250 ICE I found on the web was just shy of $8,000 for the engine.

Charlie is right. $8000 for the engine package. I think the pipe is another $1500 or so.

Not cheap by any means, but had good results first time out.

WKA has not approved them for Unlimited as of yet.
