From a mom's point of view: #1 Fun with friends--over the 3 years that they have been racing they have become great friends with the other racers #2 Going fast--where else can a 12 year old girl go 50 mph? #3 the competition--they love to win.
Their non-racing friends don't understand their need for speed, but they still love it. Funny story about non-racing friends--my oldest daughter told her college roommates that she was going to the F1 race in Indy. The roommates are used to her going racing, so they told her "good luck in Indy" when she left.

My wife kept saying that my race car was not a "family" sport. I said "sure it is, you guys can wax the race car", but she didn't buy that.
Then I met these really great guys where I work that race karts. I started checking it our and before you know it, both of my boys are now racing karts and I'm saving up for mine. It's a lot of fun and compared to the big car it's really affordable.

I could go into all the standard reason people give, the rush, the cost, the ladder, but really it is the only thing that gives me the same feeling I got when I would fire the cannon on my M1A2 Tank and hit the target. Add that to a great group of people and it is a great way to spend a weekend.

I race so that I can see what line the drivers in the back of the pack are taking:-)

Someday I hope to follow the guys up front.

I'm 40 and this is the second hobby I've had. My first hobby turned into a career so I thought I better get a new hobby.

Racing is great because the subject is deep, the people are fun and no matter how long I race, I will never know everything.

Although, I do know someone who thinks he knows everything. You might know him too as he hangs out at every track!

I RACE(d) because it's fun. I race(d) KARTS because the fun/$ and challenge/$ factor is tough to beat.

Hmmmm, good question. Danger? not a good reason for doing anything. I feel that kart racing is one of the safest motorsports there is. I have been racing since 1974 and I have only been flipped once. This was most likely due to my inexperience considering it happened on my 3rd race ever.

Speed? I do enjoy going fast. Faster the better. But I don't think it is the speed it self. I think it is a contributing factor though.

Competition? without competition what would be the point of racing. Racing without wheel to wheel competition is autocross. You have competetors but your realy racing the clock.

How about ADRENALINE! I think this would be my one word answer to the question. I love the adrenaline rush I get when racing wheel to wheel at 60+ mph. going deeper into a corner by out braking my competition and exiting the corner one position better than when I was entering that same corner.

Then there is the friendships that develop at the races between competetors. Many of my friends are people I have met through racing karts. For the most part kart racers are the nicest and most helpfull bunch of people I have ever met. I have had engines loaned to me after blowing up my only engine, invitations to to stay the night at racer's homes instead of staying at a motel and track side assistance as I often attend races by myself.

For these two reasons I have been racing karts for 27 years.

I think it was the movie City Slickers where Jack Palance said "you people spend all year getting knots in your rope and then expect to get straightened out in a week out here" (or something like that).

Well what keeps me coming back for more is the 100% focus of racing. I remember arriving in JAX in April, totally stressed (30 hours on the road didn't help). But from that moment on, being totally focused on the kart and the racing, everything else went away. Pulling out of the parking area on Sunday night I was absolutely physically drained but mentally "cleansed" rejuvenated even.

I loved that feeling in the 70's and I can't get enough of it now. Karting “unties my rope”

It's going to be a long winter!

I race karts because karting is the best bang for the buck in motorsports. And its the most fun.

It is a shame that we all have to explain, at times why we race karts. As karting does suffer an identity crisis. Quite simply, a person can road race karts that go just as fast, if not faster than most sports cars, cost less and with better competition.

The problem is that even devout road race enthusiasts don't believe how well karts perform.

As far as the guy who said that trips to the Playboy mansion were just a dream must not race an enduro. We have to hire security to keep the girls at a manageable level. I guess that if I could get my wife to got o mre races, I wouldn't have to hire security.
