On the safety side - When wiping down your kart, in between races, the lack of paint or powder coating makes it much easier to notice any cracks that might be developing in your welds and/or tubing.

Paint is actually used in some applications to detect bending, cracking and metal fatigue.

I don't think that 4130 tubing rusts like other forms of steel. I am not saying that it doesn't rust - It just doesn't rust as bad.

To prevent rust, we just wipe ours down with WD-40 or similar oil. The aircraft and boating industries sell oil coatings for bare metal. They supposedly leave a dry film coating the metal. We have tried it and found that WD-40 works just as well although it is not dry.
