I've lapped a lot of lens parts and usually used a surface plate on emory clothe with oil or lapping compund if I remember correctly. It might have just been oil, I forget. I've found that lapping in a figure eight pattern helped even the wear as did flipping the rings over every so often. Then measure with a micrometer. Are piston rings as critical?
