I know the exact position will vary according to many factors, but the manual says start at 1 1/2 open, and someone else I know said 1/2 to 3/4...

What have you found?

Chip,

It depends on the air. Sometimes it will be 7/8th open, sometimes 1 1/4 open. Do you have exhaust gas temp on your gauge? If so, lean or richen your needles so that as your rpms are going up, so is your egt. peek at about 1100 degrees. You will be about spot on then.

If both your rpms and egt are going up and suddenly only the egt starts to drop, quickly choke the motor by covering the inlet holes on the airbox. This could save your motor. Then imediatly richin the high speed jet.

Tim, how far away is your probe from the piston?

Chris,

The probe is 6 inches from the piston. When you install it, make sure you leave yourself slack or when you adjust your chain tension you can break the probe and they are expensive.

Mine is about 2 3/4 inches from where the exhaust pipe header connects to the cylinder, on the inside radius of the exhaust pipe header. If I took the same measurement from the outside of the radius it would be about 3 1/2 inches from the connection to the cylinder.

I would guess there's another inch between the header connection and the cylinder. So the sensor is probably 4" from the cylinder (based on it's physical locaion in the header (an average of 2 3/4 inches inside radius and 3 1/2 inches on outside radius).

Since it's closer to the piston, wouldn't my temps read higher than if the probe were 6 inches away?

Thanks!

Yes, they would read higher. How much, I am not certain. If you run your egt at 1150 I would say you should be safe but check with russel racing to make sure. They may tell you that 1200 is good based on the position of the probe on your kart.

The best way to tell if everything is okay is to download your data and compare the rpm line to the egt line. As long as both rise and fall together at the same slope you should not be lean. Watch for any unusal spikes or changes in direction by the egt line that does not follow the rpm rise and fall. If the lines are following each other nicely, the question is, are you running fat because you don't have enough egt?

Let me restate something. If you see drops in egt while the rpms are rising, this could be mean your engine is detonating which is generally a prelude to sticking or things worse. This condition usally means your mixture is lean.

That was my next step. Last weekend I ran it up to almost 1300 degrees. Now I'm going to go check out the graph and see how it compares to the RPM graph.

Great info! Thanks!

Where would your low speed needle setting be with the high at 7/8ths to 1 1/4 on the high?

Thats a good question Axcel. I generally run them approximetly the same, but do not generally go below 1 on the low speed unless the air is really bad. At some point some of the leopard drivers at our club have run 3/4 to 7/8 on the high needle and low.

Without egt I would not venture into anywhere near 3/4 on any needle Shocked .
