What are the various possibilities one might encounter for track surfaces? and What would be the optimum associated track temperature for that surface?

We have always measured track surface temperature and then tuned the kart to get the tire temperature that we desire.

For road racing it is often track temperature plus 30 degrees that we allow

For Oval racing it is often track temperature plus 50 degrees that we allow.

With relative ease we can tune tire temps from 130 degrees on a low to about 180 degrees of a high.

We find it is tire temp that we tune to get grip. We can not change the track surface temp so we stay with a metric that we can control.

How do you measure the track temp? can you use a digitron gage with the probe?

Jimmy,
The only real consistant way to measure the track temp is with an infered temp reader. Intercomp has great products, you should check them out. Its a "Pistol" style looking piece of hardware that tells the temp at what ever you point and pull the trigger at. They start at $99.00 and go up from there.

Good luck bra!
