Just to go with a bit of a different discussion, I am always interested to hear where people came up with the paint schemes for their lids.

So, jump in guys and tell us.

My temp design is an homage to Edward Van Halen.

A lot of people get ideas from other paint jobs such as the very popular gridding on top, and then change them up with a tad different, more personal style. Also, lots of drawing and playing around with ideas is how mine came about.

Let me clarify . . .

I am not wondering how one goes about finding a design, I am wonder what INSPIRED your design? A favorite driver? Family origin?

Tim,

My last two helmets have been based of the same design. I saw the design in an European Karting Magazine. Both times I changed the colors and added some thing I liked.

I don't know what I would do with out seeing all the helmets that are already painted. I get alot of ideas from other helmets.

As for my lid design... its an original

Started with a few pieces/strips of stickers which generally reflect my country of origin and grew from there. I was trying to find a combo that represents systematic and yet aggressive... but just can't seem to figure what

In the end, a few $ in stickers can go a long way.

Helmet painting and design is one tough gig! As the owner of the one time famous "the Art of Racing", I know first hand just how difficult it can be to come up with a design, be it simple or complex. When I was doing this for a living, it was everyday duty to come up with designs that would display a persons beliefs, attitude, country of origin, team involvement, you name it. Then there was the corporate side, where a sponsor needed the identity of their company represented in a manner that would be convey the propper message. All the while, everyone is expecting originality, and perfection. No matter what, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. By all means, it is a very difficult task, no matter how talented you may be. By all accounts, I probably designed and painted close to 1000 helmets in my six years of doing business. Sometimes hating it,while at the same time loving it. The most memorable one being the original that I did for funny guy Tim Allen, which was displayed in the Smithsonian Museum for six months before being buried in a 100 year time capsule commemerating the 100th anniversary of the automobile. It didn't do much for my bank account, but it sure was cool!

I got mine from the late Greg Moore, if you remember what my helmet looks like Tim. I do like your homage to Eddy Van Halen. Great band, great guitar player

I think my original design got the most questions asked. I have always had a bullseye in the design of my helmets (or mutiple ones).

It really was done by my fater when I was running 4-cycles and he got some vinyl out one day and started playing around with it. I came home one day and he had put these bullseyes on it and it looked different than anything I had seen. Of course, as a kid, I wanted to be like everyone else and didn't care for it much until the first day some other kid asked who's helmet it was... and said it was cool lookin'.

That's all it took for me, so my next 4 helmets were all like that. This latest one keeps the bullseye on the back ond top, but the sides are different. My last 2 were painted by corby concepts.

I've now had 5 helmets that have been painted, and about a million sheets of paper that I've drawn on. I finally hit the design I think I'll stay with for a long time on my 3rd helmet.

I came up with my design by drawing many different versions of course(I have a whole folder of artwork)and looking at a lot of magazines! The 2 things I HAVE TO HAVE everytime I get a new lid painted by Kuzzins Kustoms will be the 'heartbeat' in the back of my helmet and the 'V/pontiac sign/sowrd' looking thing on the front of my helmet. (Its been called numerous things) That leaves a lot of room left, but the rest will most likely stay the same. You'll know what I mean you've have seen my helmet(s).

Im a perfectionist to the max, thats the biggest reason I design my own stuff.(Not only helmets) Well I enjoy doing it, but I don't trust anyone designing something for me. When a painter screws up my design, Im not a happy camper. But who is? My last 2 helmets have been with Kuzzins Kustoms who is also Official Helmet Painter of Skip Barber, and I had no complaints. Awesome work! So, the painter has something todo with the outcome of the helmet too.

Alright Drew-

I'm with Gary on this one...lots of ideas can come from other helmets...but sometimes you have to expand beyond the norm for ideas. I painted a Formula Renault to look like a guy's girlfriends scarf! So I guess inspiration is where you find it. I've used textile patterns, album art (showing my age again!), anything that gets the creative juices flowing. I once was struggling for ideas when the clients mom brought us some refreshments...hey, this pattern on the napkin looks kinda cool! We used it...so keep your eyes open, and inspiration WILL strike!null

Maybe it would lull the competitors to sleep! No, once i have the dough to get a proper paint job, I am dumping the Van Halen thing and going with the design I've had in mind for several years.

Besides, something like that would cost WAY too much!
