|

After about 6 months of ignoring the symptoms , I finally went to my family doctor and had him confirm that I have an inguinal hernia. (Getting sick and coughing a lot aggravated it, plus it helps you realize it in a hurry.) I'm going to assume it was caused by a season of lifting my #260 shifter off and on the stand. At least that's my story!
I talk with a surgeon this week, but I was just curious to hear stories of other karters that have had hernia surgery, or any surgery for that matter, and your experiences recovering and getting into your kart the first time out afterward. _________________ I am a precisional instrument of speed and aeromatics. - Mater |

Go ahead and get it over with immediately! I had a slight umbilical hernia from about 2yrs ago that has just been aggrevating me and went to doctors 1 month ago to confirm it. I went into surgery 2 days after. Surgery was super quick and easy. The first week of recovery was kinda painful, but that was expected. I am 100% now and ready to get into my kart.
You don't want it developing into something worse, as in getting larger. |

If you can run a 12 minute mile you're good for a kart race.

I had it done last spring, took 3 weeks off to make sure it healed correctly. Could have gone back in 2 weeks but wanted to be sure.
After having the issue for a number of years sorry I did not get it done sooner. _________________ Marshall Martin

Never had a hernia surgery. But I had my 9th open heart surgery just over a year ago. I raced for the first time last week. At the end of the day I felt like I went to a gang fight and my gang didn't show up .
Will be back in the seat next weekend though _________________ Began kart racing 1959. Made many friends along the way. |

Had my inguinal hernia repaired 6 years ago but you will probably notice the area from time to time afterwards. The day after the surgery is the worst but gradually the pain diminishes. After 3 weeks you should be about 95%. Make sure your surgeon does more than 2 of these a year, i've heard of people having to go back in cause the hernia repair didn't hold. I think there was some faulty mesh being used with most I heard of, though.
Do it now so you are ready to race next month!

Well I met with the surgeon yesterday and he gave me a more thorough examination than my family doctor did. Now I get to have two hernias repaired since he found a much smaller one on my right side as well! Surgery happens in two weeks and he said I should be able to kart roughly 4 weeks after. I'm going to miss the first couple club and one the regional races, but I'm ok with that now.

I think I'll be in good hands, Ian. According to my general surgeon, this is the most common procedure he does. And, according to the orthopaedic surgeon I work for, "he is a highly capable surgeon." _________________ I am a precisional instrument of speed and aeromatics. - Mater |

So everything went well with my surgery 6 weeks ago. I'm sure I went through the typical aches and pains of recovery that was to be expected. Since I couldn't get any practice days in, yesterday was my first time out on the track for the year at my local club race. During the day I felt pretty good with no problems. Today, it feels like I started a new exercise program that included plenty of crunches! It's just a slight bit tender in my groin area, but nothing more than a fatigued feeling.
Now I just need more seat time. I'm a bit rusty... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syX_8gGv_Sk _________________ I am a precisional instrument of speed and aeromatics. - Mater |
