| There was discussion a year or so ago about the potential for 250 four cycle shifter engines being allowed in KM and I was wondering if that had been decided on or was still a posible option - just curious as I'm considering switching from a PRD tag engine to a shifter and wouldn't want to build something with no class to run in - thanks |

Here's the relevant section of the rulebook:
19.1.D.3. Other Engines: Engines must be either a) mass produced single
cylinder two-stroke engines not to exceed 125cc or b) mass
produced single or twin cylinder, four-stroke engines not to exceed
250cc of total displacement. No prototype, pre-production,
“works-type” motors or road race engines are allowed. Shifter or
gearbox type motors are prohibited. Karts with engines under this
specification must run at a minimum weight of 360 lbs.
So we haven't approved 250 shifters, but automatics are OK. _________________ KM #68 - Haase/Honda kart

| Thanks Scott - I read the current rules for 2013 and found the section you quoted but was wondering if the proposal from the Dec 2011 fast track had been decided on or was still being considered as an option for next year? I Hadn't found any reference to the outcome one way or the other. Thanks again for the quick reply |

Last I recall Scott, they were not allowed to compete Nationally, but were legal to run Regionally (as opposed to not even allowed at all). Not sure if the paperwork ever went through on that, but it was supposed to...

Last season at a couple of events someone showed up with 250 2-stroke shifter karts. Two completely different guys at two different events...weird. Anyway, I didn't say anything about it since I'm the only other kart and they were both first timers. Neither could get within a few seconds of me. I would have liked to try them out just to see what I could have done with the extra horsepower, but I didn't want to open myself up to any protests when it came to the PAX times. _________________ Pax

| 250 2 cycle would be a fun ride to try - I was attracted to the 4 cycle 250 concept because I think with a wider power band it might be easier to drive and HPD has developed a package for Kart applications - looks like I'll go with a 125 2 cycle but not sure if I should use a cr125 or an icc type - I weight about 220 lbs so I don't think I would haft to add anything to make up the additional weight for the icc |

PAX,
I think those 2 stroke 250's are specifically not allowed for SCCA Solo. You could have jepardized the insurance sanction had the NEWBS caused an incident. _________________ Arrow AX-8/ Rotax Sr. |

Good to know in the future, but I'm not the Safety Steward or Tech Inspector so I don't believe "I" did anything other than not complain about it. _________________ Pax

Unfortunately not as many SSS have any knowledge of Kart rules. It's not something they see every event.
Isn't a kart just a kart? CR250 and 125 look pretty similar even to me. My ICC looks and sounds different but that just another variable. and then you mix in juniors and the SSS says just as long as the Junior steward has it they won't worry about it.
When I did my SSS school there wasn't even mention of karts except that they exist. _________________ Arrow AX-8/ Rotax Sr. |

At your weight an ICC or PI mod Moto would be the ticket.. 250 4 stroke might be a good option but time will tell if the Karting world moves that direction... Currently it is an expensive experiment with a limited resale value.
All IMHO / Unofficial yada yada. _________________ Jason Vehige

FYI, a friend is selling his ICC setup in Philly right now. Just posted over the weekend. Very fast setup and has an extended porch installed for tall drivers. http://forum.phillyscca.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=13186
Boston area might have some ICCs available, too. _________________ KM #68 - Haase/Honda kart

| Thanks for the link to your friends kart - however I'm only looking for an engine and I think I have one lined up - when I bought my intrepid I got a shifter cart frame figuring I would make this upgrade after learning how to drive it with a tag engine and now is the time |
