Grand-Am GT and GX

Ok, I may have missed something. Mazda had a number of teams racing in the GT class. Now it appears they have moved to the new Mazda6 in the GX class. What's the real difference between GT and GX?

From what I can see, Grand-Am GX it's a step down in performance from the GT class.

Instead of GT cars like the Audi R8, Porsche GT3 Cup, and BMW M3, GX will have the Audi TT, the Porsche Cayman, and the BMW 1-series. Plus a few other models that fit into that performance range like the Scion FR-Z/Subaru BRZ, Nissan 370Z, Ford Focus, Chevy Cruze, the already mentioned Mazdas, Hyundai, etc.

Grand-Am PR Blurbs state that the new class is intended to "showcase new engine and fuel technologies that otherwise do not fit in the already existing GT class rules...".

But the truth is, Mazda needed another class to hock their wares since they nixed the RX-8, and no one would honestly believe that a diesel-powered 6-series could possibly compete with a Porsche GT3 Cup in GT, even if it was tube-framed.

That's another thing about this GX class: like Grand-Am GT, both tube-framed and production body cars are eligible.
