Below is all IMHO
Mod Moto w PI
Pro- wet clutch (unless it breaks), internal water pump, ability to change ign curve to suite course/surface, stock parts access, strong bottom end torque, some prefer the carb due to not having to mess with emulsion tubes....
Con- hard to know if you have a good one unless from a "name" builder, some older builds eat pistons due to compression and porting, narrow power band, sounds like a walrus being killed when you rev the motor on the stand...LOL
ICC
Pro- very consistent performance across brands/builders... Allowed mods are few, Carb is easy to keep in the sweet spot, pistons last a long time, cleaner packaging as it is designed for karting, strong mid and top end power, quieter.
Con- external (axle driven) water pump, Dry Clutch needs more maintenance but is easier to access and repair if needed, parts are more expensive, lack of low end.
Both are stupid cheap used due to the current stock Honda trend, 1500-3000 should fetch top quality stuff!!! I have less than 1500 in my "a" motor.... _________________ Jason Vehige

We are lucky in Charlotte to have a fantastic large lot at Zmax Dragway so most of our courses are of national caliber. Currently at our local events I'm usually in the top 20 out of 150+ drivers running my well prepared, but not fully prepared Elise ( car is probably 1 to 1.5 secs under prepared on a 60 sec course). Is there a package that would let a 200 lb driver be equal or better to what I am currently running for prep level? |
Chris, my brother runs a shifter kart downthere. Actually, both Keith Vail and I made it to the EVO shootout there earlier in the year. If you want to try it before you buy it, i'm sure he would let you hop in it. He is ~5'11" and 205lbs or so, so likely you would fit in the kart almost perfectly. PM me if you want his info.
Also, there is a new kart track in Morresville: http://mooresvillemotorplex.com/ it is brand new and look like it will big a big time player in sanctioned events next year. They have rentals, or run what you brung as well. You might go give it a try and see what you think.

Thanks for the heads-up on Mooresville, Josh. It's less than 3 hrs away for us, so might be the closest facility (and looks to be one of the nicest in NA).
Chis,
Almost all the advice you're seeing here is great. Watch the classifieds for a kart package with a 2008 and above chassis with either a mod Honda or an ICC motor and you can be in business very quickly for pretty good money. Stock Honda motors come with a premium and you won't make min weight, so stick with a mod or go to the ICC. _________________ KM #68 - Haase/Honda kart

I ran the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course earlier this year in the F600 and really enjoyed it. Serious pucker factor going into Nascar 3 at 130+ mph and keeping your right foot flat to the floor. |
Chris-
If you want to try out a shifter before buying in try posting on Triad Sports Car Club's forum. We have four karts running with us regularly, two stock moto and two ICC. You're more than welcome to drive mine at an event, but I have to warn you I have the "fat boy" seat in it, I weigh 250# and it fits me perfectly. The other kart drivers are smaller than me and are pretty generous with codrives. _________________ Scott Sawyer,
