|
|
Hello everyone.. I'm new to the whole kart racing thing so please bare with me..
I purchased a 6yr old Birel chassis with a fairly new 125 rotax senior... (less than 5 races).. It was only run once this yr before I purchased it..
What I need to know is what maintenance should I do on the Engine/kart??
(again please bare with me but I have to ask since I cannot find any mention of it in the manual.. do these engines need a oil change or filter)
Thanks in advance.. |

I'm sure some searches of the forum would help you get the big picture. As it is a sealed engine, there is little maintenance to be done to the Rotax. The oil in it is gearbox only and needs to be changed from time to time. You need to remove the engine and set it flat to get the correct oil level (from what I've read). The power valve diaphragm needs to be wiped clean at least every race day (some do it every race). Spark plug, power valve, oil, coolant, exhaust packing, carb, and fuel pump are the only maintenance items you can touch without breaking the passport seal. If you are storing it for the winter, clean it up, put some fresh oil in it, drain the carb, put a squirt of 2 stroke oil down the spark plug hole, drain the coolant, and put the battery on a tender.
Wipe the chassis down, and inspect for cracks /damage. Check all bolts for tightness, and safety wire / clips. Lube chain, and bearings (frequently). If you are storing it, make sure the valve stem cores are out of the tires, and wrap them in plastic. Store the tires in a warm dry place (on or off of the chassis, can leave them on the rims). Don't leave fuel in the tank for long term storage, there are folks that drain the tank after every race day.
Look for a video on youtube on how to service the power valve. I found the zip tie trick to be extremely helpful.
I'm sure some more experienced folks will chime in with more specifics. |
