I was wondering if anyone might have some experience and recomemdations for a complete set of alignment tools? Lots of diffrent options some real world experience as to the quality of them would be helpfull.

If you can afford it, the sniper is the way to go. Easy to use, accurate and quick.

I had the exac-toe 2 with spindle extenders for a number of years. These work well if you can fit the bar under all of the front-end parts of your kart (steering, bars, brake bar, etc). The spindle extenders are nice because you can leave the wheels on and get a "loaded" alignment with you in the kart. Here's a link to more info: http://www.accelerationkarting.com/exac-toe2withxbar.aspx

(note: I would still be using the exac-toe if it hadn't been stolen out of my trailer a few year back)

I used a tape measure with some success, but it can be a pain and time consuming to be accurate.

Forgot to mention: I have the V2 sniper (cheaper version). Still, it works great.

What about caster? Would there be any logic in getting a caster/camber tool and doing the toe with some straight edges and ruler off the rims?

If you do a search I think you''ll discover that this topic comes up repeatedly. Some people use string. Others exact-toes. Still others use snipers. All claim that their system works great and that the others are either too expensive, not accurate enough or are too hard to use.

We don't measure caster off a tool, we just base it off the settings on the pill adjusters.

For camber/toe, Sniper is the way to go. Easy and quick.

I understand how you could set the castor somewhat equaly side to side but without a measuring tool how do you know where your at? How critcal is caster?

You don't need to know what the number is. You're tuning for some end (e.g., better turn in) so you know you want more or less, but knowing the exact amount is irrelevant.

One of my karts has a detent in the frame and an allen screw in the ecentric that sets in there to get a fixed position for castor. So I understand that there is no need to know the exact degrees because the position is fixed and can be set the same on both sides. The other kart does not have the detent or allen screw you turn the ecentic and lock it in position with the spindle bolt. How can you work with that without something to measure it?

Set them roughly the same each side. Eyeball it. Being .5 degree off isn't going to feel any different.

Like TJ said, eyeball it. And to take it a step further, the camber and caster are changing simultaneously. Therefore, if the eccentric pills are placed the same from one side to to the other (well, actually mirrored), the same camber measurement side to side should produce the same caster. This is of course ideally and assuming the chassis is not tweaked etc... You probably won't get it exact to NASA specs depending on the tool you are using to measure, but it should be close enough.

Not anymore they aren't. At least if you've got the sniper system that everyone seems to be running.

The instruction sheet that comes with the sniper alignment tool gives instructions on how to check caster side to side, in relationship to each other.
I have both exact toe and the sniper one. I prefer the sniper set up

If you want to take full control of your karts castor/camber settings then 'Snipers new SA1 Linear Caster/Camber Adjuster' this is the only way to go Wink
