Mychron 3 Gold, or Extreme (or a Plus if you dont care for track mapping).

I paid $200 for a Brand new, never used 3 Gold just a couple months ago. That was a REALLY good deal, but you can usually find them for around $350. Getting a new Mychron 4 setup with the same features as a 3 gold would cost $900+. And the 4 doesnt have the cooool shift lights at the top! Twisted Evil

Depends how deep you want to go with your data. Like Tim said, Mychron 3 Golds are excellent value for money. Speed\distance sensor combined with an accelerometer gives you the ability to create a track map. The MyChron 4 does a lot more on its own screen, histograms\graphs and things like that that the 3 does not. What you can review on the actual screen of the 3 is much more rudimentary.

Which model? there are many and the price varies too..

Basic (RPM, laps and one temp)
2T (RPM, Laps and two temps)
Plus (RPM, Laps, two temps, speed/distance, shift lights, selected gear)
Gold (as per plus but adds a lateral G sensor)
Extreme (as per gold but has analog inputs for brake pressure, steering angle or whatever you desire)

The basic and the 2T use a different data download cable to the others so keep that in mind too. http://www.aimsports.com/products/karting.html

Cool. Is it coming with the download cable? If not you are looking at $25-30 used and probably $60 new for one. You can make your own with an old USB cable and Binder 719 connector if you are OK with a soldering iron.

Thats a nice deal. The 3 Gold will give you more data than you will know what to do with most of the time Laughing

I think we've been through this before, but the download cable is more than just a USB with a binder connector. Might want to do a search on that.

Might have been somebody else you are thinking of, pretty sure this isn't something we have discussed in the past...
The Basic and 2T have a serial (or at least a non-USB) interface at the "unit" end. Therefore, yes, with those models you need a serial>USB adapter somewhere in the signal path.
The plus, gold and extreme have a USB controller built in all you need is the pinout for the binder 719 connector.

Been using a homemade download cable on my gold for three years now. I ripped the B side of an A to B USB cable (AKA printer lead) off, soldered a binder connector 719 ($7) on, wrapped it up with a little epoxy and has served me well ever since.

Piece of pi$$ Very Happy
Plus, Gold and Extreme only. Will not work with Basic or 2T.

Just my 2 cents. I've had both. On my old 125 I stepped up to a mychron4. Nice unit. The biggest problem I had was downloading data to race studio. Probably something I was doing wrong, but this year when I was building a new kart I went back to the 3 with ebox. Does everything I need

I made my own cable also. Binder connectors are more than $7 though. Binder wont ship you a connector that can just go in an envelope for .44. Instead they charge 7 or 8 to ship UPS Rolling Eyes

guys I am looking for a computer for the kart and have been looking at the aim and alfano.

I see several people who like the Mychron 3 Gold and extreme, I noticed these model are still currently being offered on the US site under auto.

As mentioned they can do much more than the mychron 4 which is kart specific. Is it mainly a cost issue why most people choose the M4?

I have been looking at the Alfano over the Mychron 4 based on the larger screen, but the M3 seems a direct competitor in that area.

The M3 gold has an Internal G sensor for track mapping, so then you would not need a GPS uning like you do on the Mychron 4 will you?

Also, with this information would I will still able to overlay it over an image of the map?

Another feature I like is the shifter indicator light. Anyone has used it and can tell me if it works on a go kart ?

By the way, I also like the M3 because I can use it on my car for autoX can I not?
