Good Morning,
It is the start of race days here in Lyon. With yesterdays practice finished and times qualifications done, all the groups have been formed and its time to race.
For me yesterday did not go as well as expected but overlall I am still happy with how it is all going as I am not familiar with the chassis dynamics and the difference in styles of the equipment . I have been looking for rear grip basically the entire time, and the feel of the brakes is much different than my Tonykarts. The IAME Belgium / Sodi team that I am with is making all the changes that I want and also doinf some of the things they think will correct the problem too. I am looking forward to today, I wish Jim Jr. luck as he is starting up front and he is pitted right next to me.
The other North Americans have had good and similar results in qualifying, with several having unfortunate things happen to them. So we as a group, have some work to do today to remain strong in the heats.
Well the sun is just coming up and juniors are pushing up to the warmup grid and the lights are still on around the track, so its like night practice.

Joel

Bonjour,

The start of race days here at the IAME International Finals are set to begin with morning warmups under the lights as the sun is just cresting over the tree line. Qualifying is in the books and several North Americans are positioned real well for the day, with several running good and and a few that had unfortunate luck in qualifying and will have challenges ahead of them thru the day inorder to advance to the main events for tomorrow, thru the points system.

Begining in Junior X30 competition, Dustin Stross (DR) of Ft. Myers FL searched for speed in qualifying but lacked a bit and will start 28th on the field. All junior competitors are transfered thru to the final. Stross is looking to move forward thru the three heats as he tries to gain a forward starting spot for Sundays competition. Junior drivers have seven lap heat races to gain points towards tomorrows Pre-Final and Final lineups.

In Senior X30 competition, Jacob Duvall (DR) had solid final rounds of practice gaining speed as the day went along and it showed in Qualifying. Fast enough to be 22nd in qualifications, Jacob will start 5th in group for all four heats. Jacob looks to finish high in all heats and gain a good start position for tomorrows action. Scott Hargrove (PRAGA) was able to get 38th overall in qualifying, he unfortunately was inthe first group of the four for qualifying so the track was not the best for him, but regardless he turned in good times and will start 8th in his group in all heats. Jens (SODI) struggled with chassis handling all day yesterday and could not find the rear grip needed and fell back inthe standings to 56th overall and 12th starting in all groups for todays action. The hard charging USA driver will look to impress with consistant progress up thru the field in all heats. Canadian, Adam Isman (PRAGA) had mechanichal trouble on the outlap in qualifying and pulled into the hot pit area to make an adjustment before reentering the track to complete the reamaining laps of the session. Technical Control disallowed his times as stops were not permitted and he is related to the tail of the field for the heats and will look to steadily move forward in the 11 lap heat races.

For Senior times the top five are all French drivers with a difference of .6 seconds from Pole to the last North American with a time. A very close filed of 88 drivers.

Last class of X30 Masters found Skusa Supernats competitor Kip Foster (SODI) of Austrailia setting the fast time of 50.940. American Jim Russell Jr. (SODI) came in 8th overall in class and will startt second row of all 3 heats in his class. Russell admitted afterwards that he made some mistakes in strategy for qualifying and also got held up by a slow kart on what would be his best lap. Sector times for Russell showed that he would clearly be on pole if if all were put down on the same lap. Canadian, Ronnie Hyde (PRAGA)ened up 27th in class of 43 racers and James Derrig (PRAGA) had the unluck break of having his transponder left onthe charger inthe pit area during qualifcations, resulting in no times for him and starting at the tail of the field in all groups for heat race action.

Intersting fact in the orgainzation, after qualifications, engines are removed and presented to Technical Control, as in the case of Russell the engine was not recieved back for hours after qualifications. So, intense inspections are taking place in all classes. Also the stewards are are very observant in all track activities.

Thats all for now, practice is set to begin.

X30 Junior heat race #1
#71 Dustin Stross, drove a good race advancing forward up to 20th overall from his start position. He was closing in on the pack in front of him with good speed as the class was fiercly battling.

Senior Group A vs B 36 karts on track
1st Gasrcia best time 50.240
15th Duvall best time 50.855
16th Jens best time 50.411
24th Isman best time 50.706

Good progress by Jens and Isman advancing up greatly through some hard battles and fast times at the end of the heat

Senior Group C vs D 35 karts on track
1st Gounon best time 50.342
18th Hargrove best time 50.642
Hargrove was up to 10th at one point but erratic block driving by several drivers forced him backeards and the kart appeared to fall off greatly midway despite going to the carburator.

Senior A vs E heat race 2

Jens finish 20th, big bottle necks at the start, lots of contact and hard racing. Shuffled back in groups that got stalled down in contacts making it hard to keep momentum up. Charged back up thru.

Senior B vs C heat race 2

Exciting start with alot of contact among the front pack of 10 found Duvall up into 9th or 10th at the first lap able to continue thru race for a 14th finish.
Isman made steady progress thru the pack as the race went on to gain a 17th place finish. Scott Hargrove was in battles throught out the race that put him back to 16th place .

Two more rounds of heats for everyone after the lunch break.

X30 Senior A vs C 3rd heat

Hargrove 13th
Jens 20th
Hargrove was running well, and got hung on the outsode of several corners that allowed a train that was physical in passing get by. Jens was effected on the start by a back starter that lined up out of place further up in the field and causes much carnage at the start of the race. We will see what the stewards decide on that. Unfortuanate for both North Americans as they showed speed during the heat.

Master Heat race A vs C

Hyde and Derrig, avoided the pile up on the start to gain some positions and held their own during the heat race to finish 17th and 19th respectivly. Each had thier own battles during the race, so I am sure both are pleased and happy. A
stout field of Masters was in this heat with 10 different chassis brands in the top 10.

Master Heat B vs D
Russell got jumped on the start but made a nice pass along the outside of the first turn to vome out 3rd. At the end of the last lap, Jim made a pass for 2nd and held for a brief bit to fall behind the Alpha Kart of Duchateau. When the Alpha made a pass for the lead, Russell pushed him thru and followed for a half lap to pass himself for the lead on the back stretch. This on;y held for another half lap then the Alpha passed him going into 1. A trio of OTK karts made a brave move to dive bomn into the hairpin forcing Russell wide and back to 5th with 4 to go. At the last lap the French Tonykart of Raccamier blocked massivly and allowed the other OTK ans several others to run on Russell at the turn, sending Russell to 5th. With much hand waving a aggressiveness after the checkers, the class is pretty aggressive. Russell turned the 2nd fasted lap of the race and will set to finish higher in the third heat to gain a good start for the Pre-Final.
