Man, that title sounds weird.

I just read an snippet talking about the importance of not holding the opposite sides of your crank when torquing down the nuts (either side, stator or clutch).

The problem being that you are basically ruining the balance of the assembly (the run out).

I have seen people use an impact wrench in my own shop!! (it was me, I do it all the time)

Is this a terrible and unforgivably lazy thing to do? Am I ruining my life? Is this the end?

A small impact not so bad so long as you dont hold the other side of the crank and use it sparingly. Ideally you want to either have a piston stop or a counterhold depending on what you are working on.

Its not too late for you, you can repent!

Some nylon rope pushed into the cylinder through the spark plug hole will work as well.
