Removing the steering wheel and when not in use.

simple, some cars such as F1 cars have a detachable sleeting wheel. (some road cars for autoX do also). Can this be done to a kart?

The idea is to store the kart somewhere, but take the wheels with the computer and bring it back when I ready to drive again.

2 bolts. 1 for the steering wheel hub and 1 to remove clutch cable from clutch handle. Depending on what gauge you have might have to remove a box.

Steering wheel hub bolt is probably safety wired also.

Why would you want to do this?

I don't think that a quick release steering wheel would meet the rules that most karting organizations have in place. While it's certainly possible to engineer and manufacture one, it goes against the idea of keeping costs in check.

Here's an excerpt from the most current SKUSA rulebook:

20.2.3. Safety: The following items shall be secured with a “nylock” nut with at least one full thread of the bolt protruding, drilled bolt safety wired, drilled bolt cotter pinned, or secured by circlip or snap ring if the bolt has a circlip groove (installing on threads is not approved).
20.2.3.1. Steering
- 3 Steering wheel hub bolts.
- Bolt, steering hub to steering shaft.

So, it's not a big deal to simply remove the steering wheel/steering wheel hub assembly from the steering shaft each time. The potential issue I would be concerned with is the steering hub to steering shaft bolt head will tend to continually embed itself into the steering shaft each time you re-install it which may lead to premature failure at that point.

I would recommend to simply remove your gauge (MyChron, Alfano, etc..) from your steering wheel each time which should only consist of one nut and a couple of wires to disconnect from the gauge...

Quick release hubs are allowed in IKF Roadracing and they are safe if you pay attention. You wouldn't be the first person who pulled on a steering wheel and found out the hard way that is wasn't properly secured when last put on.
Do not save money and use the sloppy hex type. Spend the $'s and get a tight and secure quick release hub and be happy.

Ken, it seems like that would be the best thing to do.
The reason I would like to remove the wheel is that in the future I wanted to get one of those european wheels F1 looking wheels for my kart that allow you to integrate the mychron, and I just wanted to take the wheel home with me to keep it from getting damaged at the shop where I plan to store my kart.
