Hello everyone, well im hoping im posting this in the right place so i just bought a Top Kart CR250 kart so i guess that makes it a CIK class. I have never raced karts before so i am very new to getting into the racing part but i have owned a few karts with the briggs raptor motors on them. I work for an automotive performance shop in Norwalk CT called The Shop CT, i am a mechanic there. We mostly work on GTRs, STIs, and EVOs most setup up for 1/4mile and a few road course cars. I my self am a big road course fan, I had a miata that i had setup for track but never had a chance to take it once my daughter was born. Hoping to be able to get into the next season of racing with my new shifter kart.

Some of the bigger questions i have are is how close are the races held from where i live in CT and what are the classes available to me?

Michael,
Check out Woodbridge Kart Club, they have been around forever and put on some great races. World Karting Assoc. also puts on some in that area too. Good luck

With a 250cc motor you are not going to find a Sprint Track race. With a 125 however there are plenty of options. Oakland Valley Race Track, Englishtown Race Track, F1 New Jersey, F1 Boston Outodoors just to name a few. Road racing is your option and only in "Unlimited" or "SuperKart" class.

You will probably have trouble making it legal for rd racing. It is not allowed in any of the superkart classes and most clubs would not want it in unlimited either. Do yourself a favor sell the cr250 and get a stock cr125. You will have many options and a much more reasonable learning curve. Good luck. Go to a track talk to people there and find out the chassis safety rules and class structures.

I have seen 250 sit ups in unlimited at all the WKA races..But without any karting experience it will be hard to get a license to race it.. Even with a stock Honda engine most orgs want you to have seat time in a lower class kart.

What did the previous owner do with the kart? Surely he put a good enough sales pitch on you. Good luck with your new toy!

Never like to rain on anyones parade, but a couple things to tell you so you don't get in over your head. I was new to the 250 class this year also and everyone I met was super nice. I've been in karting for 17 years starting with briggs then 80 shifter then 125 and now 250.
First on your chassis, I assume its a 125 chassis fitted with a 250. It won't work. Been there done that with a friend I race with. The kart never handled correct and the brakes were scary.
Next someone mentioned license. To race a 250 you need a class 1 lic. from WKA. To get that you have to have 2 years with a class 2 lic. To get that you need ex. amount of experience in a non shifter kart.
My advice as some others have said is to convert it back to a 125. Depending on what 250 eng you have it should sell pretty easy.
Just trying to help.
Have a good day
John

While a 250 on a Sprinter is not for everybody, it can work just fine. We've been doing it for several years now with no ill effects on the chassis. Of course you do have to stay on top of things. Brakes are very important, we upgraded our Birel to Brembos, way better! Different things fall off compared to other karts and you end up buying a lot of tires. But it sure is fast! Very Happy

You also need to run it on the right sized tracks - full size road courses are best. Parking lots are good for burning up old tires and small Sprint tracks will just plain beat you up.

Getting a class 1 license is not a bad thing to do, unfortunately it looks like you'll have to do two years to get it. You could move out west, we're a little more progressive in that respect. Smile

Here's a little video of our kart in practice. As it turns out no matter what size the engine, the mechanic can still get it wrong.
