The shifter lights only "learn" through driving if you do not have a gear selector switch which you won't have on a CR. It is a fairly involved process to .teach the instrument and if the gearing is changed you have to do it again. For driving it is not necessary IMO what it is nice for is date analysis later on.

GPS is not necessary with a physical inertia sensor. The physical sensor is far more accurate than GPS and don't let anyone tell you it isn't.

You need both the inertia sensor and the speed sensor to track map.

I have a 3 Gold and a 3 Extreme, I keep thinking of upgrading, but other than using the GPS for a beacon, I can't think of a reason why..... Most of us will never use the expandability of the 4, it's go gobs of features, but I have heard lots of pro's and cons about the GPS which is why I stay with the 3's for now.

Has anybody seen this?:
http://www.competitiondata.com/sensors/pg11_gps.htm

If it were a little bit more reasonable, it might make sense, but for $660, I think I would just sell my stuff and go M4......

You need both the inertia sensor and the speed sensor to track map.

The first part of this seems like it needs to be clarified more.

The rpm lights (5 on each side on the top of the gauge) will work regardless of the engine you are running. You just have to go into the settings and tell them what rpm you want them to light up at.

The actual gear indicator (small screen at the top middle of the gauge) will only work if you follow the proper procedures. They are not that hard (although i've yet to actually try it) but its not just plug and play.

I LOVE the look of the Mychron 3 Gold, it is the best looking gauge ive seen and has some awesome features. BUT, every shifter driver i've talked to that has one said they have NEVER looked at the gear indicator while driving. It's just not really necessary.

The rest of the above quote is correct. The sensor in the box is very accurate, and adding a speed sensor (usually comes with the gauge) will give you very detailed track mapping, which you can download and view on a computer after your session.

You would use that feature for looking at your data, so you would know what gear you are in in a particular spot on the track.

Question guys, Just to make sure I understand,
the advantage of the Mychron 3 Gold over the plus is:

More memory
Built-in Speed Sensor
Internal G Sensor

Which leads me to ask, to a Mychron 3 Plus can you add:
Speed Sensors
G Sensor

I am looking at these gauges as I want to also use it for the car, and unfortunately I just learned alfano discontinued their Astro model.

They all have a speed sensor, the gold and extreme have the built in accelerometer, for track mapping. And no, you can't add it to M3 if it doesn't have it.

Read through this..... http://www.aimsports.com/products/mychron3-basic/index.html

I think the screen on the three or its bigger MXL brothers is far better than a 4 but of course it is a personal preference.

The Extreme will run four extra analogue channels which is handy.

The big advantage of the 4 is the ability to expand it by canbus to a lot more than four analogue channels, the amount of info is just about unlimited through canbus.

The M4 will utilise the Smarty Cam which to some is very important

The Smarty Cam has integrated GPS

To sum up, if you get serious about Data ANALYSIS you will find that it is possible to add as many channels to the M4 as you want where the best you can do is add four channels at the most to the Extreme. Some would say that is enough, others would disagree.

Thanks. I feel the display is too crammed on the M4 ? I have never used one, but it just seems that way from the pictures when compared to a M3 (higher en model)

Extreme gives you 2 additional analog channels. You get the same as the Gold, plus 2 more that you can configure as you wish...

I was told their mychron 3 stuff was over ten years old?! and pretty much discontinued?

Anyway, they were suggesting I try the Mychron with a GPS if I want track mapping.

I have a general question. Do these gauges not display speed although they do track it? In racing is it not important to look at your speed as you drive?

the mychron 3 displays speed in mph or kph but i believe you need to have the speed sensors for that and evein if it is 10 years old it still works great and im using some mychron 4 sensors on it i dont think they have changes the connectors much

You can configure the 3's dash to view several different things, in several different ways, and yes you can view the MPH or KPH while driving if it floats your boat.

You need a speed sensor to do almost anything in the 3's, they're pretty useless without it.

Mychron still supports the 3's, all the sensor are the same as the 4 I believe, if you have an issue with a 3 gauge, send it to Aim Sports, the can fix almost anything!!!!

Thank you,

Let me ask you guys this. Do you all not look at speed at all while racing or tuning?

The only time I have really used speed is to look for top speed at ends of straights (tuning) and for track mapping. I never look at it while driving. There isnt time for it.
