Safe? In what way? Safe for the car, or safe for the people driving behind you? Many of the 'hot' fuels available have some pretty nasty hydrocarbons in them, and really aren't something that I would want in the exhaust I'm breathing on grid and on the track. The safety issues with this stuff is the reason SCCA went to fuel testing last year. Besides, the only value to higher octane fuel is if you're running a higher compression engine.
Any performance enhancement that's NOT octane-based is due to some sort of burn-booster (generally one of several oxygenates like isoprene). These performance-boosting oxygenates are the ones you don't want to breathe. Before someone points out that oxygenates are added to pump gas in many metro areas, let me mention the following facts:
-> Sreet cars have lean-burn computers, and don't sit on grid tossing raw fuel mixture into the air.
-> MTBE, a once-popular oxygenating additive popular with the tree-hugging crowd, has been found to be far more toxic than originally assumed, and has been pulled from general use.
-> The oxygenates in pump gas are designed to reduce certain emissions, but they don't guarantee to reduce TOTAL chemical emissions, nor are they generally performance-enhancing.
-> The oxygenates in 'hot' fuels are designed with only one thing in mind - performance. They really aren't concerned about the possiblity of turning your brain cells into broccoli. [That said, the emissions from a single drag bike pass are probably low enough not to matter. You don't generally follow right on his tailpipe for sixteen laps, right?]
It's your health - you decide.
