Why are there so few Yamaha's in this class?

Aside from him out west here I don't know of any others except maybe Eddie Lawson. Although I'm not sure what he runs on his ICE cart.
I think they are few and far between because all the development has been done on the Honda already.

There's 3 in South La. All YFZ (ATV electric start 5 speed) heavily modded, strong running karts. Knife rod, piston, ignition and cams can bring the necessary h.p. to be competitve with most two strokes on not to long tracks. It's scarry as hell to sit beside one on say the straight at Road Atlanta (9500rpm), but it is sure nice to push the button and re-enter the race if you should spin out or get spun out. They are blast to drive and pull hard in and out of turns with little shifting. Downside comes when the let loose. $$$$$big time. A stock engine could be used but the weakest link is that the crank would need to be welded and a stronger knife rod installed no matter. Availability is good since a lot of ATV riders quit after the big crash in the woods! Rolling Eyes

I'll stear clear of four-strokes until rules are written that allow them to be reliable and reasonably priced to purchase and maintain.
I think Eddie's ICE has a Yamaha, built by Wayne's dad, Sandy.
I've gone down the Suzuki and Yamaha paths in 125cc racing in the past and learned that staying with the well developed and supported engine in a given class pays dividends in heartburn and $'s.
Honda it will be, if I pursue a path down the ICE trail.

Yamaha power just won the first round of the Australian championships at Phillip Island. Generally the older 2000-04 engines are the best. If you play around with gearbox ratios sourced from WR and YZ426/450 boxes you can come up with something very competitive against the CR's. I also recommend a UK sourced Viper pipe from Ian Very Happy

Thank you Scott. Sounds like it requires a "project" to make a Yamaha run with a Honda that can use more easily sourced parts. It's "fun" to be different but one must be ready to resource being different with work and $'s.

Greg, not as hard or pricey as you think!! We got all our parts and indeed the complete bottom end/cases etc from the USA via ebay!!
