I have been looking to purchase a new TonyKart chassis. I am deciding between the Tony Racer and the Tony Mitox. They claim the Mitox is the better chassis, but I have noticed it only has one torsion bar (rear) as opposed to the three torsion bars that the racer has (side, front, and rear). Can anyone tell me why the Mitox, with only the rear torsion bar, is the better chassis??

Trent,

A torsion bar or bars in themselves doesn't dictate whether a chassis is good or bad. All a torsion bar does is allow more tuning options. (I question how well torsion bars work to be perfectly honest.) You need to find out if the Racer or Mixtox is what you need. The Mitox is a great Shifter and 100cc Pipe kart (high horsepower). I don't know much about the Racer, maybe it's a better Can or Briggs kart, I honestly don't know much about Tony Karts in general, Marc Miller will be able to help you the most if he stumbles across this thread. Tubing sizes and chassis layout dictates what a kart is good for, not the amount of torsion bars, so don't get the two confused.

I may be wrong but I think the Mitox has adjustable caster/camber and the racer is fixed position at factory settings...

I suspect that the good folks at JM gave you the chasis advice, and I would definitely trust their judgement.
JM has been importing the Tony for decades, and winning on them that long too. I would suggest asking for chris when you call, they offer excellent advice.

The Mitox has proven successful in 125, 80, and KT 100. I personally race it in both 125 and KT-100 pipe configurations. I love it. I am not sure about the racer frankly, but given the side bar option, I would have run without it everywhere this year. You will see that most companies are moving toward the three rail design like the Mitox has. At least Birel and CRG do the same, and I believe the new PCR as well. This is a great and classic design.

It will all of course depend on the class you want to run. And where you want to run it. I think it is wise to look at Tony, their craftsmanship is second to none, and their components are phenominally well made. I would also stick to JM Racing, depending of course on geography. They really know Tony, and have for years.

Feel free to write me ofline, and I will answer any qwestions I can, I have raced the chasis for two years now.

On a slightly different note, can anybody comment on a the difference between the Extreme 125 and Mitox 125. I am on the Extreme right now. Just wonder if it is worthwhile to switch. Thanks.

You are right Todd, the Mitox does have adjustable camber and caster while the Racer does not. That's probably a big selling point don't you think?

Call JM racing, they have been racing Tony for decades, they brought them to the U.S.

As for the 50MM, it is POUNDS, lighter than the 40MM, every team that has tested it has found it to be the next step(Tracy Karting, Ital Kart, Top Kart, Birel, Gold, etc) Including the Tonykart factory in every single class they race in Europe, save for the ones that do not allow it (MAX for example).

Good luck with your Tony, write me offline if you are looking for sprint setup info

Trent-

As Mark pointed out, I just happened across this thread. The Racer model was for all intensive purposes designed for slightly lower HP and lends itself to be a good 80cc or even a good 4-cycle model even.

The RaCer I don't think was even intended as a 125 chassis. If you ARE into 100cc, you may want to look into the ReKord as Intense (Importer from Chicago) has done some positive tests with this chassis in 100cc and especially the RotaxMax. This kart is available with the same caster/camber adjustment the Mitox has.

I have run the Mitox 125 most of the year and have been very happy with the adjustments. The only difference you will find between the JM or Intense is mainly the axle configuration as JM has imported most of their line with 50mm axles and Intense uses the 40mm axle.

Both companies have found success with both ways, but I chose a 40mm design MAINLY due to the ability to find parts and replacements easier and for less money.

When I was talking to Mike Speed regarding the difference between the 40/50, he explained they found it slightly more consistent right in the middle of the corner, but you can bet 99% of karters out there wouldn't be able to feel what Speed feels. I have tried a 50mm set-up and didn't care for it as much because it would have cost about $500 to outfit me with the gears, hubs, etc I would need to use it.

You will also find that the Mitox has a pretty high ride height in the front, higher then most chassis (high frame to ground clearance) and the overall, the chassis is pretty light in weight (if that is any consideration for you).

-Jimmy Lo- The Extreme is a chassis that has been with Tony for years.. and for a company to keep a chassis that long with minimal changes says a lot. I think caster/camber adjustments may be an option on this kart, but when it comes to getting grip where needed, the Mitox may be a little better. The Extreme is softer by the looks of the design.

Hope that helps- wherever you purchase your Tony, you should be happy, they are a quality product.

As you probably figured out, I am new to Karting and trying to sort through the information. Are you guys saying that I can pick between the 40 and 50mm axle to use with the Mitox? Also, I have a local kart shop in town that sells the Tony. Should I purchase from them, or from somebody like JM that probably knows a lot more about them?

Just a reminder-

50mm is illegal in 2 sanctionaing bodies I know of, IRA and WKA currently (1-3/4" max), so be sure to check your rules prior to ordering.

Chassis mentioned running 50mm (Top, Ital)have been "testing" with them and production models will only be optional. The GP kart imported by Fury will be "testing" the 50mm axle in vegas too.

Weight difference between the axle set-ups is different and the 50mm is lighter due to less material needed (axle is thinner and hub materials thinner wall) but the weight difference will be noticable by "ounces", not pounds.

I don't care where people buy their TonyKart - I just want folks to know factual statements.

You should always support your local shop. I work with a local dealer for JM. JM is the importer, and has many dealers. I am sure that your local dealer will be worth their weight in gold in terms of local support.

The 40mm mitox is an abomination released on the world by folks who wanted to second guess the factory design. Even the extreme (predecessor to the Mitox) was shipping with a 50mm for two years.

Buy a 50mm, Buy it from your local dealer if you can. I would hope they are a JM dealer. If not, and you want the expertise that only JM dealers can provide, buy a few things now and then...for instance, I can sell you a vortex engine as can JM as the sole US importer of Vortex ICC engines.

John-

Unless you talk directly with the manufacturer, you should stay away from stating things that are not fact based.

A 40mm axles in a mitox are far from an abomination.

There seems to be a recurring kart shop theme in this thread.
