Can anyone tell me if the briggs animal motor is comparable to a KT100 can motor in terms of power?
I'm looking to setup a very inexpensive kart for my kids to play with.
Thanks for you help.

| I don't think they're as fast as a KT100. Saw one with a big hole in the side of it at Sears Point a while back though, so I guess there's enough power to shove a rod through the block. |

Not sure what kind of project you are building, sounds like a yard kart or something less than a racing kart?
As far as power or HP the average printed can motor is 13 plus hp vs maybee 10 0r 11 from the WKA legal briggs animal just some aprox figures, at any rate the yamaha is a few more hp. The biggest diff in where they make HP the Yamaha about 8500 rpm to ? depending on can or muffler type and the animal about 4100 to 7100 rpm.
Not knowing what your trying to accomplish I would say that if your thinking about the Yamaha for a yard type kart, that the high rpm power band and high clutch engagements and clutch maint would be a killer that the lower rpm and hp that the Animal operates at would no doubt be the best choice for operating range and reasonable clutch stalls that would survive on a yard kart or play kart project.
I would suggest the Animal motor with a yard kart type of clutch ( max-torque) or something simuliar for longevity leave the stock cam in for the easy spin so it dont rip your shoulder off when the younger ones start it.
I would check into the inteks also they have onboard starting systems already and there is a version of the 6.5 hp.
your best bet is to ask this question on Bobs 4 cycle too |

Thanks for the help guys.
I want to use this as a mule engine on a kart that my kid and his friends can drive at a sprint track. The reason I want to use a 4 stroke is to cut the maintenance down as much as possible. I'd also like to know if there's a lockup cluch available.
I'll give Bob's a try.
Thanks,
Gary K. |

| My times on a sprint track are the same as the mid pack guys in the Yamaha super can (4-hole) they are at 335#, we are at 360#. It is a work horse and should be good for what you are looking for. For messing around just get a cheap Noram.(IMO)-- Dave |

| The Iame Puma 85cc is a comparable engine on power, and it's the most reliable engine I've seen so far. It's quiter and better on the ears that the Yamaha, and it outdoes the Briggs on reliability ten times over. Also, it has push button starting. In my opinion, this motor should absolutely replace the Yamaha for the Junior classes. |

| The engine package costs around $1200, and although that's more than the other motors mentioned in this post, it's well worth it. |

| At $1,200 I hope it's 3 times better.... because that's what the price is. |

How much are the Animals, $400.00? Is that price out of the box or BPed?
Thanks,
Pete |

Yes the briggs is $400 or so but you need some other stuff like a pump, mount, pipe, and a few other things.
If the IAME is $1200 complete and has electric start, that would still be a good package but certainly more expensive.
I'm starting to worry about the briggs reliability. Ok, how about the Honda GX stuff?
Thanks again,

| If not racing in sanctioned events, I noticed some very good deals on Honda GX's in BC Canada.. |

I ran some numbers for the Animal set up. If you have nothing, it will run you about $700 dollars. I just put one on my boys kart. No problem getting in on older Bug kart. It was harder moving the pedals to fit. Now we just pull the rope and drive all day.
There's a picture of it at,
