S2 quicker than S1. Maybe it's time to make one class?

Howie,

The same thing happened at Shawano at last year's SummerNationals when Lukas Johnson was quicker than all the S1 drivers in practice. By the end of the day, the S1s were faster than the S2 frontrunners.

This is practice and everyone approaches it a different way. You never know who is on new rubber. Tom Dyer showed the way in S1 and I would expect a driver of his ability to find the next level tomorrow.

We'll see how the times look tomorrow. The track actually got a little greasy at the end of the day as well, as the temps pushed 100 degrees.

What I'm saying is that we have two small groups running identical times on the same equipment and many in S2 are as experienced as most of the S1 field. Why not have one good class? I'm not talking about the Supernats.

Howie,

We're had this conversation before, and it's all about building the two levels of 125cc racing again. The only reason that S1 has just 9 drivers is because SKUSA lost at least five drivers from last year, who are either staying at home or have turned to wrenching instead. I would expect that 6-8 racers will get their A licenses for next year and S1 will take it's next step.

Like we said before, just let it be and let it grow. I would be willing to bet that there will be 15 S1s next year and 40 S2s on the Pro Tour.

Rob, why is it nessissary for two levels of 125s on the regional and pro tour level? I'm just not clear on that. Please help me understand. What would be wrong with 55 karts in tha class using your math of 40 and 15? I know this subject has been discussed before but I don't remember any explanation of the need for two other than more chances for everyone to get a trophy.

IMO, I like having the second level of 125cc competition because I believe it provides a better training platform for young drivers. I strongly believe that it's not only good for developing racers to be challenged by tough competition, but it's also important for them to learn how to win. Back in the days of the Stars of Karting with the large ICC class, I think that some mid-pack drivers did not get the full value of training because they were always mired mid-pack, getting discouraged that they could never run with Speed, Carlton, Vorrath, White and the like. With the S2 class, the frontrunners get a chance to learn how to WIN, not just how to run hard mid-pack. I also think this second tier of 125cc racing provides these up-and-coming drivers with better exposure, as they get to be in the limelight.

So that's my position on that question. S2 is valuable for improved development and increased exposure. That, and I saw it in its heydey in the ProMoto Tour, when S2 played a vital role in developing some great drivers.
