| And the helmet sometimes is just not enough. I know of a driver in Colorado that got hit...and we lost him...very sad thing to happen. |

I've always thought that current attachment method of 3 bolts is retarted. Like a quite many things on kart desing as a matter of fact. Decent engineer would come up with three faster and more secure methods in an hour.
I was just thinking the poor lads neck; worst case there at impact speed 50mph would about equal dropping 55lbs on the head from three feet. Luckily tyre would absorb majority as it's lighter.
I've lost wheel three times. Twice broken bolts and once broken wheel. Once it was my friends fault who didn't tighten the nuts, other was IMO just material giving up. |

This fellow is lucky, the wheel was not coming at him from the opposite direction, a lot less relative velocity to deal with. _________________ Bill Martin |

multiply 55 by 5 and then your a little closer to the actual force |

hard to tell but is that a part of the axle sticking out of that wheel? or is it the drivers hands? almost looks like about a 10-12" piece of axle with a gear on it. _________________ Blaise Haynes

Flying tires are obviously extremely dangerous - as one mentioned the unfortunate Colorado incident. I try to check the tightness of the lug nuts regularly between sessions. For my safety I hope others are doing the same.
Also, never tighten lug nuts while the kart is on the ground, you will often not get the wheel on the hub properly and break a stud. _________________ Where are YOU Racing?

| I use the Steel barrel nuts with a washer under them. I had a wheel come off right when my son came out of a corner it striped all the threads off the nuts it was the aluminum ones, since then I have used the steel ones. I could not believe how far the wheel went and it was a good thing it did not hit anyone. |

the majority of the time its the hub that detaches
late minute changes and people forget to tighten them up |

I think that's just a shadow across the top of the fairing. A completely severed axle would be near impossible. The karts look to be a group of shifters, in which case it would be impossible for part of a severed axle to slide out with both a wheel and a gear attached. |
