I usually race laydowns at Summit Point, but I'm considering making my first trip to Mid-Ohio, but I was wondering what the track is like -- and specifically, how well it is laid out for karts. I like lots of runout, and from what I can see, the track seems to have same. (I'm not a fan of walls at a kart track, but there appears to be plenty of grass between the walls and the part you're supposed to drive on. True?)
It also looks like a lot of fun. |

Mid Ohio has a web site (www.midohio.com), which apparently was recently redone to add all kids of gee-whiz effects at the expense of good content (like a track map). However, you can find one at: http://www.na-motorsports.com/Tracks/MidOhio.html
They run the full track including the chicane at entry of the Keyhole (that 180 degree right hander)
As a fellow WKC'er who has raced at Mid Ohio, expect the following differences from what you are use to at Summit Point:
1. Arrive with your kart fully prepared and all the spare parts you think you'll need, because there is no where near the kart shop support (stocked trailers at the track) we are used to.
2. Unlike WKA, they DO race in the rain, so you may want to get a set of rain tires.
3. Some of the classes are different (I think they run IKF rules). Personally I wouldn't bother going out and spending a lot reconfiguring your kart to be compliant, as they will let you run what you have. The only potential downside might be getting through tech should you make it into the top 5.
4. Expect large classes.
5. I don't know if the club still does this, but they used to have a two-stage entry, where they would let club members in first, and delaying non-club members by an hour or so.
6. You can rent paddock bays, but they are expensive. Most people who do so seem to pool several karters together.
7. You can buy race fuel at the track--the challenge is finding someone to operate the pump.
8. There is no tent camping allowed at the track (RVs are OK), and if I'm not mistaken, pets are NOT allowed.
The track is a blast to run. For the most part the pavement is very good (the only rough part I recall from running there last year was the exit of the Keyhole), with plenty of runoff areas. The walls to not seem intimidating (like they can be at a track like New Hampshire). Mid Ohio has a combination of banked and off-camber turns, which makes it really interesting. |

Martin,
Check with Don Warren or Steve Young. they both have been to MO a couple of times.
Sean has covered every thing pretty good. couple of exceptions, They don't run IKF rules, it is wka, unfortunately! However, the pitt pass insurance is IKF. As for access to the track, the club officials have access to the track before the general public or club members. these are mainly the people who are responsible to run various functions during the race weekend (i.e. scoring, scales, etc..) the race activity is supported/managed by club officials/members with one or two exceptions for a paid official (i.e. tech person).
the track is fine for karts. however, there are places that your attention will be rised! compared to summit, I don't think there is much to be concerned with.
there are some rough spots, but compared to summit, you'd think you were in heaven.
if you can get there by fri, they usually let people in after 5 pm. if not, be there as early as you can on sat.. the line may be long. |

Hey Martin,
Between Sean and Ardy you have a pretty good idea of the particulars of Mid Ohio. I would simply add that it is a great track to drive.
As to your query about walls, there is probably only one to be concerned about. I would call it turn 9, the entrance to thunder alley.
If the conditions are very hot, or very cold,(more likely this time of year), you can over cook it. It is suddenly very close to the exit of the turn. In general it is very rare to end up on the outside and in trouble, but it can happen.
If you want a look at the track from a slow,
sit up gearboxer perspective, I have video.
However, it takes time to edit this stuff from 8mm to VHS so I am not giving it away.
E-mail me privately if you're interested.
