There has to be 6" of clearance between the bodywork and the steering wheel.
FROM THE SIDE of the steering wheel to the SIDE work, etc NOT I repeat NOT from the top of the steering wheel to the top of the drivers fairing... which is where some people Pre Race had questions.
This applys to sit- up karts with bodywork too.
With a Quick Relase steering hub you may have 2" clearance in the steering wheel area ONLY.
I hear that this may be confusing in the book under ICE, but will be clarified soon. I don't have my book here, its at work, so I can't give you the exact wording. |

Greetings,
I was just on the IKF site, and found a rule that all the 250cc folks should note so they don't get a nasty surprise at the next road race meet.409.14.2.2 Open 2-Cycle(change 250cc Shifter weight to): 560 lbs.

Now from what I understand, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, that rule will go into effect on September 10, 2001?
I'm wondering, is this supposed to be a safty related regulation? Has anybody considered the effects on tire wear that carrying an extra 100# will cause? As it is we can smoke off our tires in less than 1/2 hour in high heat. If we get another GN in Las Vegas, with the karts at 560, they will weigh over 620 to 650 for the start with full tanks, I don't think the tire folks ever considered those kind of loads on their products. We cannot get any SL series tires in the 6" wheel sizes we use, I think that this ruling will be very counter productive to safty. What do you all think?

The Road Race Section is governed under the 300 section of the rulebook.
This rule will NOT affect anyone in Road Race.
The 400 is SPEEDWAY> a completely different division.
That rule change from 540 to 560 is for SPEEDWAY MIDGETS. This is the type with a ROLL BAR
Any rule changes that affect the road race classes will have a number in the 300's. UNLESS it is a general rule change 100 or a tech update, etc.
Each division is seperate, under the proposal system seperately. A rule change in one divison (say RR) does not affect a class that may be the same or similiar in another division (say Shifter or Speedway or Sprint). |

Our team was at the recent IKF Road Race Grand Nationals. I have personally never experienced such a huge boon-dogle in rules enforcement
You must not have been to a wka event!
seems like both orgs are working very hard for the honor of that boon-dogle trophies!!
John, there are a number of karters/organizers, etc who have been working on a set of uniform rules for the ICe and F/E classes. we have a mailing list which includes people from around the country. the rules are almost done and ready to be made available to various clubs and orgs. if you are interested, drop me an email. |

To Russ Shaeffer,
I am late to this thread but kudos to you for your observation. It is something I have been preaching for some time. Each class must have a niche or purpose such as you stated; low cost medium or all out. Upon this purpose each particular rule can be compared to see if it in sync with the intent of the class.
For example, to not allow mods or subs to a $30 part on a $10000 kart for cost containment purposes is ridiculous when you allow full porting priviledges which cost hundreds to make and thousands when they grenade.
I for one would like to work with you and JR on rule making and further I believe that I have a decent enough ability to word rules to avoid loopholes as I have been practicing this over the last couple of years worth of rules. Are you guys going to attend the sept 9th lunch in LA? |

Thanx Ed,
I glad that some are able to see my point. You have the exact intent of what I'm trying to get across. My most sincere wish is that enough people will start looking at the long view of karting and demand that the racing organizations set a clear path for the direction of all divisions, so that the individual committees have the guidance they need. Then we can move from talking about the individual specific rules and move towards an overall plan that will make karting more enjoyable for all. We'll also be able to go to a National or other big event and know that the race will be decided on the track and not in the smokey back room of the tech shed.
