I realize this was posted once before but here I go again....I lost the post!
Someone mentioned a while back a source for Rotax batteries......yes, the non-legal ones that you can use in testing but not in the series. Do you guys remember?
Thanks,

Be careful using any non FIAMM batteries. I tried a Panasonic "equivalent" that is supposed to be a good quality battery, and it didn't make it through the day of practice. It was a lot less money than the FIAMM, but it lasted less than one day, and it's scrap. |

| Try your local computer supply store. Some of the batteries that are sold for "battery backup" systems will do the trick for testing. |

Another option is the Odyssey drycell. It's designed to be used in total-loss racing applications, and it carry enough punch to easily run a Rotax. It's even got a warranty - yes, they guarantee it to function properly in a raced vehicle. Sources that I can think of off the top of my head are Race Central in Portland, OR and Racer Parts Wholesale in Indy.
Unfortunately, it's rather expensive, but if your local series allows it, I would expect this battery to go several years without any trouble at all. Since we know the Fiamm battery won't go anywhere near that far, the Odyssey is probably a good buy. Frankly, my experience in all forms of motorsport is that you generally have two options:
1) Pay a lot now.
2) Pay a little less now. Pay a lot later, anyway, when you figure out why option (1) was cheaper.
...just my $0.02....

Word of caution on batteries. At SKUSAAC this year a Rotax competitor fried two ignitions before he found out his "practice" non FIAMM battery was the cause. Now THAT'S expensive!

Yeah at $300 a pop for ignition coils that's $600. Hmm...even at $45 per battery that's (13) batteries.
By the way for all of you Rotaxians I have a new webpage that will begin posting 'weekly' Rotax Specific Tech Tips. Including lots of 'Battery Tips'.

Bill, or anyone, want to try to explain how a battery can "fry" an ignition ??.
this is a simple 12v DC power source - sure some are better than others - but i dont see how it can do anything other than fail to low voltage state (and the Fiamm units do that too !).
