| What size socket is require to change the Rotax drive gear. I'm guessing 36-38mm, but don't have a measuring tape that short to fit in the housing. |

Clutch drums retail for $48 and the gears are about $40. That's $88 for each different set up. I would hardly call that cheap... Especially when we run 12T, 13T, 15T and 16T at all of our different tracks.

Phil and anyone else interested:
I feel the same way regarding the piston stop. Some people say the piston stop won't hurt anything, others say it will. I am of the school that I would hate to find out that the anti-piston stop people are right.
So...
I have designed a tool that replaces both the piston stop ($53) from Bombardier-Rotax, as well as the vise mounted clutch tool ($27). It acts as a positive stop for the clutch drum or the flywheel while on the motor without stress on crank, piston, etc. And it doubles as an engine spocket removal tool.
Anyone interested can e-mail me...

Rob,
I use a 3/4" drive 1-1/2" socket from Craftsman. It fits snug and I have had no problems yet. You will also want to buy the 1/2" drive to 3/4" drive adapter for your ratchet.
I have to change three karts gears on an almost weekly basis, as we go from sprint track to autocross and then to long track racing regularly.

| Why dont you just buy extra clutch drums complete with sprockets? The drums are cheap enough. |

What is the best way to loosen then crank nut? Piston stop or using something to lock the starter gear? |

| Ditto on what Michael said!!! It's soooooooo much easier and it's cheap. Without a vise, loosening that big ole nut is a bear! Oh, by the way, even though there's a slot to put a screwdriver into to hold the crank, the surrounding aluminum casing will break right off. Beware! |

Thanks for all the replies. Got my buddies gear changed out, thanks to the replies.
Seems like Rotax could easily redesign the clutch housing or whatever you call it so the process would be MUCH quicker. Sounds like a GREAT aftermarket product. |

| To remove the crank nut to get the drum off, use the post sticking out at the back side of the motor right next to the flywheel gear. I use a screwdriver between the post and flywheel gear to keep the motor from turning. Works great, and fast too. Rotax makes a tool that holds the drum to remove the gear nut. Check it out. I got mine from Netkarts.com |

The clutch drums are nowhere near that here and you have already got the sprockets anyway. |
