Yesterday I had to give some room for a Prairie dog that wanted to share the track with me. I am sure some of the guys here have some good stories about having to avoid hitting small animals on track lets hear them.
Not sure I would say what I had was a near miss.

^^^agreed. The speed difference between a Sr. kart and a kid kart is significant. That added to the fact that a kid kart is typically driven by a kid (imagine that!) that has very little driving experience or sense of how to behave around traffic. I have seen them make a hard turn on a straightaway for no reason. _________________ Blaise Haynes

Animals have no idea what we're doing out in their fields, I haven't hit one but I know people that have
Kids however are an entirely predictable thing to have out there and most are better drivers than many adults I've observed. IMHO, I'd like to see Cadets off track while adults are out too. I had a very simple rule for my daughter a few years ago, when the shifters went out she came in.
I've had to fix karts for clients where the kid was doing nothing wrong but some adult didn't have the patience to wait for a good place to pass
$500 in damage and they didn't even say they were sorry or offer to pay
There should never be a reason to crash into another kart during practice and very seldom should it happen in racing but some people get the "red mist" every time they go out on track....

Amen about not crashing in practice. It is practice....if you need to give up some time to pass somone safely...do so. One of the reasons I rarely sprint race any more. Can't afford the physical and financial damage.
I have not seen one practice collision (between two or more karts) in road racing in two seasons. |

Our local track just started a "kid kart only" practice session and they did it for the very reason you stated. My youngest 8 years old is box stock so on weekdays when the track is not busy he goes out with the shifters and TAG. 98% are courteous and safe it's the stupid 2 percent that worry me and cause me to flag him in when they go out. It has nothing to do with what he's doing he knows to slow down to make it easy for a faster kart to pass.

Garrett hit a snake at NNKC a few years ago, it flew up and landed in the kart behind him. Needless to say he no longer had pressure from behind... _________________ Matt Dixon

Hi Brian,
Yeah, I got the humor about kid karts
But as you know when it's your kid out there it's pretty hard to see anything funny about people driving around/over them at the wrong time
I'm sure I'm not the only one who was taught that it's the responsibility of the overtaking driver to pass safely no matter what the car in front is doing. I was also taught to keep my line and point overtaking drivers by on the side I expected them to go around as a courtesy.
These are some of the things we learn as novice drivers that stick with us and if everyone is on the same page it keeps things safe out there. The problem comes up when you get folks don't go through the whole novice process, (some kind of training, x on the rear number pannel and helmet till you complete your first 3 races, etc.) If you never had to learn it then how can we expect you to follow the same conventions we were taught?
I also like to give my novice drivers a whole bunch of different pit signals to get them into the habit of watching the pit wall for what I want them to do. When you get good at this you can even come up with a signal to throw the snake into the kart behind you

I nailed a squirrel at Portland International a couple of years back. We were on formation lap, and I was off pole. A squirrel ran out on the track in front of us, decided he'd made a mistake and turned back. Too late... I got him! All I saw was a rodent with a furry tail go flying in the air over my head. The corner worker that saw it gave me two thumbs up, so I guess I eradicated the problem. He won't be doing that again.
