Not sure, but I think around $2200, so you spend 1200 more and instantly make it back on the resale value, since now it's "stock honda legal motor"

Depends on how much research you are willing to do. I was able to put together a stock honda legal motor for significantly less than 2200.

I bought a kart with a mod Honda for 2900.00. Took the motor pipe silencer etc off and sold the roller for 2000.00. Bought a complete stock Swedetech top end plus numerous extra parts for 300.00 and then a swedetech GFS for 300.00 so yes you can build one for far less!
I just bought a very fresh 99 stocker with motor mount, pipe, silencer, both sprockets, chain, radiator, radiator mount, hoses, clutch cable, carb, ECM, coil, etc for 1000.00

Guys, you are missing a point here. for 1000 he can have new 99 top end, for 2200 he can have new everything, he is already doing the work himself. Yes it is possible to put something togeteher for less, but not new "stock 99 " everything.

Frankly I don't see where it's 1000.00 for just the top end!

For a complete rebuild, you're probably change the top end, plus the crank and a bunch of other things (bearings, etc.). That could easily be $1k. Last I looked, the kit was less than $2k, so that might sense.

The crank, bearings etc are not considered top end!

Ace, I am sorry I misspoke, the original poster said he figures 1000 for rebuild. Anyway, I don't see a reason to keep arguing about this, to each their own and every person will do as they see fit.

You can do a full rebuild with all bearings, seals, gasket, crank, piston cylinder, head, new studs and nuts for $794 to the door. Just saying.

And if you take away the transmission bearings, studs and nuts which aren't "necessary" then the rebuild with a new cylinder is only $680.

I see figures for the kit motor tossed around all the time on here but nobody has ever been able to give me a specific source/part number. The only Honda kit motor I have ever been able to find was about $3500.00 IIRC through Honda Performance Development. I WOULD have bought a kit motor for $2000 but I never found one!

I paid $350 for a used '99 bottom end. Almost $1000 for the rebuild parts (new cylinder, head, piston, crank, all bearings, all seals, and a few odds and ends...water neck for the cylinder, etc). That's about $1400 in the motor. Add a pipe for $375, a silencer for $100, a carburetor for $200, pump around.......oh never mind.....looking at all that has got me depressed!

So, I ended up going the used, complete motor, route - picked it up locally in Sacramento, thing looks damn near brand new, and runs like a raped date!

finally tied up all the loose ends and pulled out the last of my hair figuring out all the "little" things involved in the switch from ICC to Moto - in hindsight, nothing was overly complicated or difficult, but this is my first kart, so there was a learning curve...
