Not sure where you're looking, but you can get a whole RS125 bike for that price...

A good mod top end, jug and head is going to set you back close to $1500 right there. A programmed ignition is another $500. PWK carb, pipe kit, is another $600+ Add that to the $2k you got into it, and could just about have a complete RS125 with spares.
You're set on doing this, we're just saying by the time you get done, you'll have more into it, and still have MX motor.
I wouldn't mess with mod top ends, tune on the pipe and get that right...

Yes exactly. An RS125 is around 6 grand. That's the exact thread I based it off of.
by choosing to start with a moto engine, it doesn't really matter what you do to it in the end, it's still a moto engine, right?
Come on. If there were nice parts to use that are a remarked increase in performance vs the '99 stock moto ruleset, i would easily do those. I don't know all the tips and tricks however.
I would eventually like to start working around seeing if I can get the power valves working as well. We will see.

Just a few observations/questions/comments.
How much power do you think its making now?
Why don't you get a before-mods dyno done and find out?
Having raced both shifter karts and my motorcycle (2007 R6) on track, I would be down right scared of an engine with anything close to a shifter kart engine power band on any bike. Mod motos have similar power bands to ICC/KZs. My ICC engine works like a small displacement motor with a gigantic turbo on it. I have zero power until around 10k rpm, then I'm shot out of a cannon. If I had this type of chassis upsetting power band on a motorcycle I would high side coming off of corners.
I would suggest going for a setup that makes the smoothest power possible. That will be the ticket to fast laps on the motorcycle. Don't be overly concerned with a HP number or goal. Just keep a wide smooth powerband. _________________ CKR/KZ

Paul,
I will be doing a dyno with the current setup, and tuning it with the setup that it has. Then from there, the idea is to provide a game plan with the data obtained in order to find improvements. I don't want the power to hit like a bomb, but rather, a typical nice peaky two stroke that i'm used to. _________________ Shifter kart technology on two wheels? |

A couple of things come to mind....
Your comparing a whole RS125 bike to a single CR125 motor, you can find an RS125 motor for less than what it going to cost you to power up that CR. You can also part out the RS and make it very cost effective. Also being a former bike road racer, a small bore like your building is all about corner speed, which is all about rider and chassis setup. A RS chassis with a CR motor in it, will run circles around what your building just by the chassis alone. Like I said you have your mind made up.
Next thing is if you don't want a hard hitting power band, then the last thing you want are power valves, they give what little mid/bottom end a 125 has.
Another limitation you have and it's bigger on a bike is the CR gearbox.
