Guys,

I am just realizing that my kart is going to be underweight. I assume it is around 200lbs. + my 175 leaves me about 30 lbs. too light to run in "open shifter" at MMX. So....how do I add that much weight?

Which engine are you running? which chassis are you running? Does your chassis have ceramic brakes?

I was 175lbs last season with ceramics brakes with an ICC motor, I was coming in at 192. With ceramic brakes you save around 6-8lbs.

30 lb's is not much. go to local scrap yard and you will find about 5lb's "pucks" of lead already preformed. Mount mostly on the seat. You may want to mount on the steering support in front of chassis to balance. The best place on the seat is under the front flaps, mount those and don't touch them, just check the nuts periodically, the rest goes on the back and side of the seat, those you can move around. Like I said 30 lbs is not that much, I will need over 60 lbs this year for NESKS.

Well....maybe I put the "kart" before the horse! How should I go about weighing the kart? I'm not sure how I can weigh something that big. Can I just take a bathroom scale and put 3 blocks of wood under the three wheels, measure the weight at the wheel and then move it around? Does that give you the total weight?

Flat surface...bathroom scales...good to go! It might not might spot on, but I am sure it will pretty damn close!

You might not end up as light as you think once you put on all the safety gear, fill the fuel tank up, etc. I walk around at about 190 and usually cross the scales at 410-415 with no weight, although I have 10-15lbs in my tool box left over from running Rotax. I once ran into a scale that was off and had to add 5 lbs to make sure. If you need to add weight you can purchase it from kart shops or diving weights work great and are what many guys use. Paint it white, and run a bolt with safety wire through it. I recommend these http://stores.empirekarts.com/Detail.bok?no=870. They come 2 to a pack, and are already pre drilled for safety wire on the end, hard to find. If you have a metal salvage yard close by stop and ask for the lead bin. I found 5lb hockey puck size weights in one once, perfect for the kart. If you have to drill a hole in the lead go SLOWLY with the drill bit. Lead is extremely soft and has a low melting point, so its very easy to snap drill bits. Drill holes in your seat and mount it to the outside. When I added weight for Rotax I typically ran a 5lb weight just under the crotch area, and a couple smaller pieces on the back of the seat down low.
