Starting on putting a CR80 on a CRG Bad Boy frame.I know the motor has set for a year or so and the guy I got it from said it had been moth balled before it went into storage. I'm planning on replacing all of the fuel lines and tubing along with the radiator hoses. What else should I look at an be weary of.
Thanks |

Hi David.
I purchased a mothballed CR 80, installed a new piston, checked squish and ran it. It ran okay but not great. I sent it to Sharkshifter for review over the winter and found that the crankshaft was not aligned and that it needed transmission bearings.
Given that CR 80's will break if not regularly maintained, I'd send it to your chosen engine person and get it rebuilt before the season starts. That way you'll KNOW what condition the engine's in.
YMMV

I have a RCE 80cc pipe for that CR if you're interested. $60+shipping and it's yours. That's what I bought it for, thinking it was the 125cc version. Now I sold my 125 and the pipe's just on a shelf. Will beat the stock pipe, for sure, and may be better than RLV. Silencer not included. Can send pics if you'd like. Have fun -- there's a CR80 for sale here locally that I'm considering -- it's got a pipe though. _________________ Owner, www.hamiltonhelmets.com // UAS Racer #76 // Karting for karting's sake...keep it fun! |

Hi David, make sure you have the heavy duty 3rd gear, after time the stock gear will let go, and when it goes, it will take a lot of other gears along with it. I purchased a motor from a guy, he said it was just gone through, well 30 hours later, 3rd gear blew, took out 6 other gears and the countershaft. Upon disassembly, the bottom end had indeed been gone through, but the stock 3rd gear was not replaced with a heavy duty 3rd gear. Also run a Mikuni carb, the stock Keihin carb works well on a motorcycle but not on a kart.

| Thanks for the advice. According to the guy I got it from and a guy from the track. I was told in two different stories the exact same thing. That he had shipped the motor to a motor builder in Oregon and had it completely gone through and tuned for IKF rules. He said it cost him about $5500 for all the work. When he got it back he installed it and took it to the track once. Being an older gentleman and use to running animals it scared the crap out of him and kicked his rear end so he moth balled it and put it in the shop. I want to trust the guy who guided me to the motor since he was helping me look for one and has been in the sport a long time and is also a 4-stroke building. |

Why not ask the motor builder in Oregon of what record he has of the rebuild. Then you'll know exactly what was done and when. _________________ Only when the checkered flag goes down do I give up. Second means nothing to me - Max Papis

| It's not so much what needs to be done to the motor but it is a good idea to probably call and see ehat was done. But im confident that the required things were done like 3rd gear and what not. I was more looking for guidence on trans fluid, carb, pumps, and things of that nature. |

David, sorry for the late reply I have been a little busy in Buttonwillow.
I live up in Lake Tahoe, so more EastCal. Haven't been up to Redding since 09 and have heard Medford has been repaved, what a beautiful track. _________________ Matt Dixon
