I visited some of the website for the painters posted here, the low end started at $400 with the high end at $950. I do not know about you but I do not see a paint job being worth $700+ dollars. |
I would say $350 to $900 is the average cost. Value is not the same as cost. Some place value on style and can afford it. As someone who has painted a few helmets, I can tell you, nobody is getting wealthy from these prices. It is a very time consuming and skilled process, and anybody doing creative "hand" work should get a good price for their talents. |
This is the reason I have never had a custom painted helmet. The price you pay for me is just not worth it. I considered it getting into on road racing so the helmet should last a little longer. In the past a new helmet every year was more or less standard, whether it was do to being worn out/crashed on or sponsorship changes.
Might be time to do some research and look at painting my helmet on my own. |

| I'd pay $500 for the design I want. Maybe I'll get a wild bug and have my helmet done up. Mentioned it to my wife while showing here a picture of what I want online. Hint, hint honey... |

I'd also highly recommend TJ Koyen who is redoing my helmet during the offseason. In addition to being a national senior TaG racer TJ is also a graphic artist that has set up his own shop call Oktane Visual. Check it out at www.oktanevisual.com He does have a gallery of his work and also does suit and logo design as well. _________________ Mark Peters

I figure it takes me 20+ hours for a whole job. My first ones took way longer since I didn't have a process. Working about 20-30 hours a week in the shop I can probably get 2 lids done but I've gotta be busting my butt for all those hours to do it.
Painting is the smallest part of the job. Masking and taping is the biggest time consumer.
Honestly, after doing this for almost 2 years now, it's easy to see why painters charge what they do. It's tedious and time consuming to paint a helmet the right way. But it's a labor of love for us. _________________ T.J. Koyen
