HELP! KT100 Starts then Dies

Hello everyone,

I have a KT100 that starts and runs for about 5-10 seconds then dies and has no spark after it has stopped. What could the issue be?

Could be many things but first try a new spark plug and clean all electrical contacts like the ground point of the TCI unit. If that doesn't help it could be a bad coil, usually a TCI will either work or not work but a coil can work intermittently and drive you nuts trying to figure it out. How old is it?

You know a carb set up for racing will not idle unless you crank in the low jet. Are you sure it's not just flooding out?

I'll stick with my TCI recommendation as to what to look for first. My experience with bad TCI units is that the engine will start then die within a few seconds then not restart.
Let it sit a few minutes and once again start then die. I've only seen a few coils die on a KT but then again I've only been building them for 30 some odd years.

I agree with Greg, but make sure the unit that holds the TCI, "Chain Guard" is making good contact with the engine as it acts as a ground.

My guess is the ground wire on the coil. Take back side cover off and see if the little black wire has broken away from the connector.

Ditto to all of the above.

Look closely at the TCI mounting tabs. They have a tendency to crack where the screws go through them. That also destroys the ground.

We're pointing to the TCI and/or coil since you have no spark.

Also check to make sure that the sparkplug boot is tight on the wire and that the 'clip' in the boot that attaches to the top of the plug is tight.

If you do have spark and still have the same issue, the carb may be gummed up internally and you aren't getting enough gas flow.
