Some time ago, Ashley and I were racing an FKCS event in Jax Fl.. The straightaway is very long and is one of the drafting tracks in this country. The class was mini max and in this class, when you are drafting it can hit turbo and lunge forward quickly. I told her before she went out (starting last), that these kids that she is racing with are not glancing over their shoulder before pulling out to pass. I told her that I have been coming to this track since the 70s and have seen many get hurt by pulling out of the draft without looking to see if someone is beside them. I told her, that when she pulls out to pass a kart that is behind another kart, to move over a full width, so if the kart she is passing pulls out without looking she could avoid a crash.. You may want to share this with your kids on long tracks.. What I am talking about can be seen at 6:25 on this clip.. You can see her go by on the far left.

She was just lucky. If Ashley was 2 yards farther back, she would have been collected in the crash.
This video was posted here long time ago as an example of what kind of speed difference you can see on "beyond 12.5K" in MiniMax (4:36, 5:50 especially).
So if you race and you are close to or at the top of RPM, would you expect somebody going 10 miles per hour faster than you? Do you have to constantly look back for that? |

In mini max with turbo, yes you need to look back, Tag, yes, shifter, yes.. Comer, Yamaha maybe not as far back because the closing rate is less, only 6 or less mph faster. There are only a few tracks in this country that have this issue. Last week at the rotax finals, there was a 20+mph headwind at times. On the data it was 9 mph faster in a "suck draft" and 5 tenths faster in lap times in the rotax junior class. There were quite a few crashes on the straightaway.
2) "Lucky".....
I would guess that would have to be considered debatable.
3) Those that have learned the skill with the mini max turbo, may be considered good candidates for the Indy car "push to pass" or the formula 1 rules that change often on the drivers use of turbo increase.
Ihor, once again,my point was missed. |

Steve,
I believe they are just talking about the effects of the draft at those tracks.
Jim,
You're spot on. Sadly, I have seen drivers (myslef included) get penalized or at least accused of blocking due to looking back. So both drivers AND spectators/dad's/teams/officials need to get educated.

Steve, The "turbo" in rotax is to do with the timing curve and rpm.. It is like the Mac's in the early days with the setting the tension on the points (mavrick). More can be found here.. http://ekartingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=97885&highlight=turbo
P.S. If you watch the video that I posted, you can hear the engine get it at high rpm, but not every time. |

| Steve, there is a thread (long) on here somewhere about "Turbo" in minimax. Basically the consensus is that at some RPM, if you bounce and get some "blip" into the motor, a whole another few hundred rpm becomes available to you. |

2013 FWT ROTAX TECHNICAL REGULATIONS
Today's News...
The 2013 FWT will not implement the recently announced 2013 Rotax Technical Regulations, but will continue with the 2012 Rotax Technical Regulations, as posted on the FWT web site, until further notice.
The 2013 FWT will implement the use of the Mini Max rev limiter, beginning with the first rounds at Palm Beach. For details regarding the Mini Max rev limiter and its implementation contact Josh Smith of MAXSpeed Group.
FKP’s Bill Wright: “I’d like to thank Josh Smith from MAXSpeed Group and Andy Seesemann from CotA, and our respective technical support staffs, for working together to make some important decisions regarding the Rotax technical regulations to be used at the 2013 FWT. Working together we can provide consistency across all our programs and that further strengthens the already incredibly strong Rotax kart racing program in North America.” |

Best thing to ever happen to Mini-Max class hence why we got out of it 1.5 years early than planned. Now its mainly about driving and chassis setup, no more of this 14250rpm nonsense. |
