I think you should take it a step further and mark the entire track with fire hose or paint. That way the drivers can make up the racing surface as they please and we on the used kart marketplace get 0-wear karts.
On a serious note, tracks with curbing that is undrivable keep the apex lines "on the track". Having sight lines and being able to look ahead is a boon to the drivers ability to race safely... However racers being the beast they are will take any advantage that they can. The curb and infield should either be an accessable part of the racing surface or not. If they aren't intended to be part of the race surface, make the curb slow or stop any racer who tries to ride them.
Our local sprint track has concrete humps in the curbs. You don't go flying or lose control, and nobody uses them for extra track space on the apex. 3 wheels over the curb to attempt to gain an advantage? The curbs should be designed to make this an obvious disadvantage. On a temporary track this is hard to do, but I applaud the effort. Just from the videos of the SKUSA Nats I cringe as they turn each blind corner. |

I watched a guy go wide into turn one, looked like he had a problem and was going to pull off the track. He turned the kart, cut across the track and jumped the curb like a ramp, sparks flying on take off and landing. He missed the front of my kart by inches, landed next to the guy in front of me and pushed him to the edge of the track. The guy did it three laps in a row.
I still cant figure out if it was the coolest thing ive ever seen or the dumbest.
I think over all, the curbs were a success, but they need something on the inside to keep people from jumping them.

For years I look at the what if thing. What if a driver, just before the curb had tire to tire contact coming down the inside and air time was in store. A driver hitting the back side of that curb could do some very bad things to a body.
Cool Idea though. Like all things, It needs a little tuning. JMO.  |
