I just put a new Raptor III in my kart, and will be running the box stock class. Briggs recommends 15 hours of break-in time. This is not realistic! How much break-in time is really required before you can run it under race conditions?

Yes, plus it is unrealistic that you can take out of the box and race it. It should be taken apart and clearances double checked and everything retorqued. They sometimes come with missing or loss parts. For breakin just put 13 onces of 30 weight oil in it, fire it up on the stand and run it with out reving it up for 10 minutes, drain oil, let cool, fill it again and repeat, drain then fill and take it out and run it with out full sustained throttle. Once cooled retorque side cover and head bolts. fill it with your favorite oil and give it heck.

Stephens: It was a sincere question, and I was looking for a sincere reply.

If I was looking to race 2 cycles, I would be the only kart in my class around here. That's no fun, no matter how fast you're going.

Rodney, thanks for the tips. That's the kind of advice that us NEW karters need.

I can't imagine breaking in a Briggs for 15 hours....run it at idle for about 15 minutes, and then spend another 15 minutes revving it a little (1/8-1/2 throttle blips). Take it to the track after that and do 10 or so moderate speed laps.

Bring it in, change the oil, torque the head, and go racing.

FYI, on the blueprinted Briggs we rebuild them and race them - we never break them in after a rebuild.

If it's box stock...you will want to make sure you go thru the engine and make sure it's cleaned up inside. Have the clearances checked and all bolts torqued to spec. Just run the motor under light loads for 15 minutes like Todd said and change oil. Re-torque external head bolts and side cover for safe measure after it cools. good luck
