Darin,
I'm in the process of doing an Animal engine set up right now. The engine can be had for just over $400, header and muffler about $75, 15 degree engine mount for anywhere from $40 to $100 depending on what you like (the Burris one is very nice!) A Ratech clutch and a selection of springs $75. Fuel pump for $18, Chain guard $6, Header wrap $10 Air cleaner $20. This puts you at about $670. Add another $30 for chain, fuel line and throttle cable and you have all the parts you need to buy.
You should pull the engine down and check for correct assembly and have the rod clearanced (.002 to .003) before you run it - just to be sure it'll be OK.
How long you can get between rebuilds will depend on how hard you run it. Just like Yamahas used to be, if you don't ask to much and take care of it you can run all year. If you do it wrong, you might not be running at the end of the day.
For a beginner I would expect that $1000 would run you for the first year (20 races/practices) including the initial purchase.
Changing the engine oil (you change it a lot), valve adjustment, and lapping the valves every 6-8 races is all pretty easy stuff. Have somebody show you the first time and it's a snap after that.
I'm looking forward to getting my boys machine up and running over the holidays. Should be a blast!

I think Benn gave you a pretty good list and covered just about everything, I do have a question for you guys out west, How is the supply of motors and parts out there? Over here its starting to take off and the big shops, are starting to get involved but up till now there only been a few shops selling things who post over at 4 cycle.com. Is there anyplace where the IKF rules are posted? would like know how close they are to wka's Bob

Bob, I don't think there are any web sites with IKF posted rules on the animal yet but I just read threw and compaired WKA's and IKF's and they read word for word and number for number the same. IKF doesn't have the claimer rule on the clutch though.

Rod, notice that the flywheel has a range of weight that might include both new aluminum flywheels?

IKF made two classes, sportsman and stock. Sportsman is STOCK gas, even to the broached cam. Stock class is alchy and they left out the statement that ground cams are OK.

Rod, did I remember all this correctly? I read through the new rules Friday night.

Parts are dismal here in Colorado. As far as I know I am still totally dependent on you guys back east for parts. Our closest Briggs Racing Dealer seems to have no interest in the Animal.

John

We have our first order of engines and parts coming in January. The WD we have to buy from in CO is not going to stock anything so we had to make a bulk purchase to be able to supply everyone interested. We will be phasing out the flat head motors over the next two years. We are going to eliminate a few Briggs flat head classes this year and are adding a two animal classes in there place.

Thanks Brad, That's not the impression I got from you yesterday. I'm really excited about racing this engine in 2002.

John

I thought you were talking about how we were going to structure the class as far as weights and age etc. All that will be decided at our annual meeting. We had put an order together about a month ago with the intention of running them this year.

John, The way I read it the plastic fin flywheel may be used in the sportsman gas class and are not to be used in the stock meth class. The rule in the meth class on cams did say no visual check on surface finish of camshaft lobes so as long as meets the profile check grind away. In the gas class I know there is somebody that used to make broached look alike cams for the flathead, maybe they will get to fire up their machine again?
