|
|
Not to beat a dead horse, but continuation from a previous post...
I've got an issue with another R4 pipe cracking. I have been told that the cause of the crack is most likely caused due to the heat generated from welding the EGT bung onto the pipe. This first pipe cracked in the very same place, and the EGT bung was welded in the very same place. Now that the second pipe is cracked, I am looking for other options and a solution to the problem.
Where are others attaching the EGT bung onto their pipes - are there others that have had this same issue? Just looking for a solution which will utilize the EGT, but not present further problems in the future. Maybe a different EGT location, different way of fixing the bung to the pipe, different materials or process? Although the crack cause has been identified by RLV, I have not been presented with a "fix" or suggestion to prevent it from happening again.
I realize the pipe can be "fixed" but doesn't do me much good to "fix" it, if the same problem will arise again? And how is one supposed to "weld" the crack, if the heat from a "weld" caused the problem in the first place?
Looking for suggestions in achieving a working RLV R4 pipe with EGT bung in place without resulting in a busted pipe? Lot’s of folks out there using a R4 and EGT without issues – what’s the secret? Can anyone reccomend a good, experienced welder, which can yield better long term results. I think the welder I use does great work, but will certainly try another if better results can be achieved.
Thanks to All...

From the responses on the other thread it looks like brazing the bung in place is the solution as welding creates too much heat... _________________ Ken Schilling

Is there any indication that one side of the pipe would be better than the other? As it is now, i use the bottom, outside of the pipe - would there be any less stress created by using the outside of the pipe - closer to the seat? Hate to bug people about their EGT bungs, but geeze - got to make sure I do everything I can to avoid buying another. _________________ TVS Motorsports -

Certainly not me, I'm only a SKUSA mid-pack runner right now, but most of the SKUSA Spec Honda drivers don't use an EGT anyway... _________________ Ken Schilling

I think that's generally true. I used one briefly when I started out, but mostly because I was used to it from TAG. Seems to be pretty rare in stock moto. _________________ A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. -- Winston Churchill. |

Why doesn't the pipe break from just being welded together
And don't say they heat treat them after welding

Well, I'm slower than BOTH of you guys, and I use an EGT sensor. Probably like Joe, I was used to it from TaG, so I kept using them.
It's one of the tools that helps me to decide what jets to use. Not a critical item, but still a tool, nonetheless.
And yes, the bung needs to be brazed onto the pipe. _________________ Play now, work later! |

I have brazed mine for years with no problems.
I am one of the oddballs that use EGT. I road race (wth Joe and Kerry). I use the information for tweaking my jetting program. _________________ Erik

Gas or Tig, makes little difference in mild steel. _________________ If the data does not support the theory, get a new theory. (Al Nunley)
