Robert,
I need to email you back... and soon! I actually decided to get a GP8 chassis that was listed on here for sale. Most of my parts are plug and play, I just need to learn the in's and out's of engine building. What can I say, it's a chassis I know, with better brakes, it's newer, and has more parts that come with it than what I had. It'll sure be a nice back up kart
I have tried looking for lay down chassis for a bit, and I can't find anyone who makes a chassis for this sport. All of you reading this, take a little mercy on me, because as we all know by now, I am new. But are all the lay down guys rocking custom chassis??? I know Robert would hook me up if I was in a bind, but being able to buy off the shelf parts are nice too.
I was reading through the "Is our sport broken?" thread and wondered to myself... is it broken, or is there just too much customization involved to be competitive? I have tried to look for lay down chassis, and came up with nothing. Maybe that's some of the reason the road racing has diminished?
Robert, I would have emailed these kinds of questions to you, but I almost feel as a new karter, it's my responsibility to share with the rest of the crowd why I chose to do what I'm doing, and try to shed a little light on a newbes mentality.
I would love a lay down, or maybe my GP5 with 250 style body work, and getting into the unlimited class. I live only a 20 minutes drive from Grattan, and it makes all the events there pretty easy for me. Plus, Gingerman is pretty close, and I could not pass up the chance at a few laps at MIS. Those tracks have just been more iconic to me than running at East Lansing, or Ravanna sprint tracks. Maybe Robert brainwashed me early, IDK!?
Where can someone new to the sport find info about kart road racing???? That's the big question. I knew I wanted to race for a while, then I found a kart, and was lost till I got hooked up with Mr. Lawson. There is no good info for us new guys to get started with. I thank you sir for helping me out, and showing me the ropes. But I'm sure there are interested folks reading this, wondering still how it really works.
Just a few of my thoughts on the matter. Either way, still really happy about being able to run at MIS this year, and making some really great friends along the way! I don't know how the sprint guys work, but I know the road race guys are awesome, and I'll be sure to stick around a while.
Thanks MKC for a great finish for a first time karters season! And Robert, thanks for taking a chance and helping a complete stranger get into this awesome sport, and making a great friend along the way! Expect an email within the next day or so.

Jeff,
H is new.....he's on a GP CIK chassis. All he knows about laydowns is....they laydown! Sorry H!!!!!
I'm sure CKI builds a fine kart....for 100cc racing. We have built our own and altered existing chassis to accept a shifter of all types. Building your own and developing it can be.....costly! Altering will also take some R&D but is far less expensive.
I have a very slightly used Margay chassis here now. I don't want to build it to a shifter even though I have everything to do it. Who would drive it???? Sell it you say???? Thats funny......if you can sell a laydown shifter these days without taking it in the a$$ your charmed!!!! They take an ENORMOUS amount of time and patients (forget the $$$$) to build. With no real store front shop to direct new guys it's impossible to move them.
We want H in our class and eventually he will get a chance to sample a laydown but I think down deep he wants the CIK/Super Kart conversion. He just gave it away that he purchased another CIK, and knowing him......he's already sceme'n a plan to do just that!
I miss Savannah, the Club, and especially the track. Will be back there sometime next year for sure.

| Robert. You are right that the CKI is good for the classes it fits. I know the development effort it takes you to build a shifter laydowntoo. We miss you as well. How about you organize a F125 group to come down next year for a race? We will have plenty of wild hog and oysters for all you guys. |
