I went to the aim site www.aim-sportline.com and I did some more digging base on the video below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPPAUBNQjx4
The mychon is showing the GEAR and SPEED. So this made me wonder if the M4 could in fact display speed and gears.
What I found was that is you buy an E-box gold, since this device has a speed sensor and a build internal accelerometer, it will do both speed and gear selections as well as allowing for more sensors.
It will also do track mapping
"you can create track map on your PC and provide a complete overview of your kart performances, processing data coming from internal accelerometer and speed sensor. "
Ebox Instructions:
http://www.aim-sportline.com/download/doc/eng/ebox/eBox_103_eng.pdf
However, I know there is a GPS units and I am not confused and to why would I want to buy a GPS units if I have an E-box. It seems to me that the E-box will do more than the GPS... and I am not seeing any benefit of having the ebox and GPS together as shown in some diagrams on the AIM site.
Can anyone point out any benefits?
PS: I still like the M3 gold in terms of looks, it now seems like the M4 is quite scalable. |

We have run the same M3 Gold for the last 11 years in that time its been back to AIM twice - an absolutely fabulous piece of kit that I would not be without
GPS is just to slow to keep up the a karts speed of changing direction _________________ Dellorto, Mikuni and Keihin Jetting & Kart Set-up Software

John I get the same feeling on the GPS. That is would be too slow to really track something accurately. So I wonder why someone (or I) would want to use it over the ebox.
Chris, I really like to make informed purchases, but some times info is not so clear like for the CR125 so I just asked tons of question (while goodling on the side) |

I called AIM again to ask why I would need the GPS if I have an ebox.
I was told that I was much more accurate than the ebox when it comes to speed and track mapping. - Ok fine.
But then when I asked if I could have gear calculation and speed displayed on the mychron and logged with only the GPS I was told YES!
Well I downloaded the MYCHRON4 Instructions:
• Gearbox – or manual transmission. In this case you
are requested to insert on your display the gear number, i.e. 6 for a six speed transmission, 5 for a five
speed, and 2 in case of RM1.You are asked to insert the
gear number only if you select Gearbox as Drive Type.
The gear number is displayed only when you install the
MyChron4 E-Box.In case of Gearbox or Low Stall Clutch
Drive types, the Predictive Lap Time function is not
available.Your configuration Wizard has now finished
and your MyChron4 is ready to start running.
So I think on its own it does not do anything. It asks you for the type of drive but if you don't have an ebox it doesn't display anything...
Makes sense because you need both RPM and SPEED for calculated the shifts. But then again, with the GPS you do have speed and the rpms comes from the mychron.
Again is some can please tell us the truth it would be great.
I am ordering a M4, but I am unsure if to get the GPS or Ebox, or if I need both. |

WE have both on an MXL and that is simply not the case. I repeat what I wrote before, there is no way a GPS can be as accurate as a physical sensor, it just ain't possible. Remember also that GPS drifts over the day and the track map you get in the morning is not what you get in the afternoon so if you overlay runs from the morning and afternoon you aren't comparing apples with apples. Thanks Chris, I will read it in the morning. Do you use the MXL on the kart?
do you have a picture?
I just ordered a M4 2T with a CRK wheel
I ran out of money for the GPS, so I am glad you posted that information.
BTW, I called AIM one more time after my last post and they mentioned that the GPS DOES not yield a gear calc. For those interested in logging gears and also displaying it on the gauge you need the Ebox with the wheels speed and rpm. GPS speed will not work.
Chris what you mention about information not being the same makes total sense, but I am sure AIM had thought of that and some how came up with a back up plan? |

ha I can't believe I read all that just now. Very interesting. So the GPS is crap...
I do plan to get the ebox regardless.. but now I am thinking if maybe I should have gotten the M4 basic... of well to late now. I can always use EGT and water temps. |

Sorry, no picture as we are in the middle of getting another chassis built and our old kart has been stripped. The MXL Pista that we use is not a good instrument for a kart as the dash has the accelerometers and cannot be mounted on the wheel so presents problems on a kart. If I were to do it again I would use an EVO series as you can now have the MXL dash with it. That was the one fact that steered us to the MXL as at that time the only dash we could get with any EVO was the M4. We had an Extreme but sold it as the sampling rate was too slow but bang for the buck it is still a damned good thing. At the time we were developing new front end stuff for karts and needed a lot of channels and a faster sampling time. The Sniper adjuster is one of those developments and the others are yet to be released but that is a story for another time. _________________ understeer happens on road courses and usually is pronounced with a British accent. ^ looked at that gauge and its quite big and very expensive at least for a kart. But NICE !
I am waiting now on my CRK wheel with Mychron 4 Basic. Next purchase will be the Ebox with speed sensor and maybe an EGT. (I called the store and changed my order) |

Why not ? because it looks good. I hate the aim wheel. Plus one of the buttons can be a kill switch or something and the other an air horn!!
Its only a TAG/DD2 wheel because of the button on it if you think about it.
Its a wheel regardless and it serves it purpose. Steers the Kart and holds the computer. |
