Just saw where Speed got out-bid for F1 coverage for 2013 and on - it's going to NBC.
I'm worried - while not a fan of what Speed has turned into over the last several years, their F1 coverage has been great and their commentators amoung the best in the business.
I fear NBC won't put the same level of attention to F1.

What a shame. I loved Speed's coverage. Varsha was okay but Hobbs and Matchet were great. They were all very knowledgeable and didn't talk down to the viewers like you see on NASCAR or Indy coverage. I don't need Rusty to explain what drafting is 15 times over the course of a race weekend.
Any idea who will be the commentators? _________________ T.J. Koyen

If it goes on NBC sports network it may be OK. They do a pretty good job with the Indy cars.
I would think we may lose practice coverage and I'd bet we lose the live streaming practices 1 and 3 (which is too cool if you haven't seen it). |

Matchett? You've got to be kidding. I can't think of a more annoying commentator since Bobby Skidmarks Unser. If NBC gets rid of that boob and and his insistence on calling anything with four wheels a "chassis" I'll gladly switch. _________________ A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. -- Winston Churchill. |

I don't remember the specifics but I just heard a week or so ago that Speed was going to become more of an ESPN type channel with stick and ball sports and only a little racing. _________________ Blaise Haynes

The only reason I have cable/sttelite is Formula1.... looks like I will be saving some money next year... and watch them live online... I rather listen to David Coulthard ........ _________________ #11 TAG & TAG MASTERS

I wouldn't miss Matchett, and I really won't miss Posey, but I think Hobbs and Varsha are great (especially Hobbs). Perhaps it's just fear of the unkown but I also worry that we'll loose live practice and qualifying.
It may have changed, but it used to be that Indy Car produced their own coverage and the network simply broadcast it - so I'm not sure how applicable NBC's Indy Car coverage would be.
Back in the '80s (before ESPN started carrying the F1 races), I got a station from Vancouver BC, and they'd delay broadcast the BBC F1 coverage. Their commentators were fantastic (can't say I remember who they were any more though).
BTW Roberto, I doubt you'll see much F1 on the regular broadcast NBC - most if not all will be on NBC Sports, so you're still going to need cable or sattelite.

Heard the Speed update again this morning. Speed Channel will become FoxSports1 (or something like that). They have already said there will be all the stick and ball sports, as well as UFC and a few other things. Not much racing, if any. _________________ Blaise Haynes

Jeff, they said Fox already owns SpeedChannel, and has forever maybe? But they are going to change it over to more of an ESPN type channel.
I heard this a week or so ago on Sirius NASCAR radio then they repeated it again today. _________________ Blaise Haynes

Heard about this. Was never really that impressed with Speeds coverage of F1 to be honest. Really enjoy Steve Matchett, actually read his book Mechanics Tale at one point. Good read.
In terms of F1 coverage I think Martin Brundle is the best. Speed Channel became the NASCAR channel at one point and I think it's better they open up to other sports, but are they talking about doing Football / Basketball coverage etc? |

That's what I heard a few times now. Baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and some racing.
This snippet is from some website "Much of NASCAR's shoulder programming is aired now on Speed, which is expected to be called Fox Sports 1 after the re-brand.
This new contract will put the Truck Series on the national cable channel. Fox retained the rights to practices and qualifying sessions, but did not announce Monday how much will air or on what channel. Most is currently shown on Speed."
This snippet is from rantsports.com, "According to several sources, FOX, which owns SPEED TV, will convert the popular NASCAR station into an all sports station, such as the NBC Sports Network which was recently added to their series of stations.
“We continue to evaluate the potential of a national sports channel, but we haven’t announced anything yet. Beyond that, we have no comment at this time,” Senior Vice President of Media Relations for FOX Sports, Lou D’ermilio said via e-mail Friday morning.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. _________________ Blaise Haynes
