Mean while the Jersey GP is officially called off by Eccelstone from what I've heard?
Nice shot of the track there. Did anyone here hear about the insane rules they are imposing on this event? (taken from Axisofoversteer.com):

Planning on attending the inaugural US Grand Prix in Austin? You can bring your point and shoots or your iPhone but don't even think of trying to use an SLR or a camera with detachable lenses "of any kind". Forget video cameras, "no video recording will be allowed".
If you don't realize you have a "banned item", there will be no place to leave it at the entrance, and you will be banned yourself if you are found trying to get in with any such items.

Alcoholic Beverages
Animals (exception for certified service animals)

Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, skates, segways, golf carts or other unauthorized means of transportation
Coolers, thermoses or ice chests
Distribution of unauthorized promotional or commercial material
banned!
Food and Beverage (Note: sealed, individual, plastic bottles of water are allowed)
Fireworks, explosives or other incendiary devices
Glass or metal containers of any style
Illegal substances
Items that may be deemed a safety hazard or annoyance to participants or guests (balls, Frisbees, balloons, projectiles, horns, radios, bells, whistles, musical instruments, laser pointers, etc.)
Large, golf-type umbrellas
Non-collapsible chairs
Tents or canopies
Video cameras, still cameras with lenses exceeding 10 inches in length or detachable lenses of any kind, audio recording devices and tripods; no video recording will be allowed
Weapons of any kind, including guns, knives, pepper spray, handcuffs, nightsticks or other items
Evil!
The following items will be permitted inside the circuit gates.
Blankets
Umbrellas (small, hand-held style)
Baby strollers
Portable, collapsible chairs
Personal camera equipment (e.g. digital cameras, point-and-click digital cameras or film cameras)
Binoculars
“All bags, purses, backpacks and persons are subject to screening by security personnel. Fans entering Circuit of The Americas should prepare accordingly.
“Smoking will only be allowed in authorized areas. All security measures are subject to change without notice.
“Ticketholders should be aware that there are no provisions for returning banned items to them when such items are left at the race entrances. Patrons are encouraged to leave all banned items at home or in their vehicles before entering the venue or boarding any of the complimentary shuttle buses transporting ticketholders to Circuit of The Americas. |

Just what the world needs. More crappy videos of F1 from the grandstand clogging up You Tube.
This isn't anything new, anyway. It's in force for FIFA world cup matches, Olympics, and many other top level events. You do want Austin F1 to be a top level event, right?
Or maybe you'd like to be the one sitting behind the jerk spending the entire day standing up with his camcorder. |

Honestly that wouldn't bother me. When I went to Moto GP in Laguna Seca (which I would consider a top level event...it was great) there were plenty of people standing, blowing whistles, being loud, huge cameras, video cameras etc etc. Thats what a sporting event is all about. If I wanted to have a quiet uninterrupted experience I would go to the library.
Moto GP and Nascar have a better attitude towards fan entertainment than F1 has currently in my opinion. Some might argue with me, but you can't deny that Nascar in particular gives fans one of the best values for money in the sporting world.
My dad was 60 when we went to Laguna Seca for the Moto GP and he loved how loud and enthusiastic everyone was. We brought huge lenses and recorded video from several different angles without any problems.
How out of touch with the modern world do you have to be as an event organizer to not allow people to bring DSLR cameras with 10" lenses...we live in a society where cameras are in almost every cell phone on the market and the photographic quality of these cell phones are rivaling entry level pocket cameras.
F1 needs to get with the times and give fans more if they want longevity and sustainability in the modern world. Especially in the United States. |

I hope Austin has the kind of walk-around viewing that Laguna has. I doubt that will be the case.
So now put yourself in a packed grandstand with people all around you who are all going to get the prize winning photo with a DSLR and </= 250mm lens.
Now imagine spending 2 hours with these folks.
For me, having attended one or two major events in my time, I'd much rather enjoy the race than concentrate on getting photos. Maybe in practice, but not during the race.
Let me ask this. Would you pay a fee and be relegated to some less than perfect viewing positions in a crowd of like-minded individuals to bring in your D3 with 600mm lens? That's the case for most of the guys who are trying to make a living at it. |

I thought I read somewhere (maybe COTA's Facebook?) that they were changing the rules to allow DSLRs into the race? Could be wrong.

If your question was directed at me: Personally I would rather watch the race on TV because you get better view and coverage so long as it's not on speed channel. Martin Brundle should be hosting F1 on Speed, but I'm sure he has other contractual obligations. I digress...
I wouldn't give a dime to Eccelstone until he reformats F1 for the fans. I haven't actually followed F1 hardly at all this year and was considering going to the Austin GP. Once I found out about the absurd regulations I cancelled my trip.
Yes I would rather be in a crowd of people all trying to snag photos. I was in the same kind of crowd at Laguna and had an awesome time. The idea of being confined to a seat for 3 hours of an F1 race with nothing to do but sit and watch is second only to knitting in my book. If fans don't have access the event is going to suck. If fans don't have the freedom to document and personalize the event it's going to suck.
It's actually kind of laughable that F1 thinks they will control people taking video on their cell phones when almost every phone on the market can record high quality video. Bernie's age is showing.... |
