Does anyone have any advise on powering a Mychron 4 with expansion strip off the Rotax battery?

Since the Rotax electrical is a total loss system, most folks will leave accesories out of it. Let the battery handle the spark delivery only. If we had an onboard altenator to recharge or run the timing once started it might be different. But IMO its too risky considering the performance hit once the battery's charge becomes low.

Not exactly what you are asking but the guy I bought mine from had his GPS wired directly to the battery via some very small gauge wire. Pretty neat and he basically just kept the charger on the battery the entire time in the pits and never had an issue. That being said - I have not used it yet. its ONLY the GPS though - won't do anything else.

I did buy RC Car batteries to rig up a way to do the GPS but don't know if it would be enough to do the MyChron also.

Good think taking power from the engine battery source, is you can check the battery voltage on the MyChron..

We have done that for the last 4 years or so with no problems at all Wink

The AIM GPS module comes with a dual-port with battery leads. All you need is a couple terminal clips to bolt on the battery.

Some people are sticklers about not having anything connected to the battery for fear it provides lower performance - however, I have run it that way for years and have not seen this to be the case.

I even compared session to session data and saw zero voltage difference or performance change.

Hey all! I've been pondering the same thing. I am using a mychron 3 gold. I am curious first off if it can handle 12v. Secondly if there is any easy way of doing it, or just solder straight to the board.

Keep in mind I am an aircraft electrician so this is easy work for me. I am more curious as to the mychron 3 gold specifically as I have only heard of people doing this with mychron 4 more commonly done through the GPS.

Justin,

I asked this same question of AimSport a few weeks ago. They assured me that the Mychron 3 Gold Kart unit would "fry" if powered by 12 - 13V rather than the standard 9V. They then said that the unit could be sent to AIM in Italy and for a cost of OVER $100 the unit could be made compatable to work from a 12v power source.

Well that's unfortunate, but thank you for the feedback Rick!

I guess ill go a few more month.... But when it finally eats at me ill probably just wore in a voltage regulator down to 9v. It's just as easy as what I intended to do in the first place lol.

The MyChron (even with GPS) draws very little power. One advantage of running it off your battery is that the MyChron logs your battery voltage. So, if you ever suspect battery voltage is causing a performance issue you can view it right there with all your other data in the software.

On our karts, we have added a male end to the mychron power cable and plug it directly into the wiring harness female charge socket. Super clean look.

After the race un plug it, and you can charge your battery.

Sincerely,
