I was hoping I could put a shifter kart on a roofrack on top of a VW golf.

You probably can but as pointed out already getting it up there and down will be a challenge. Back in the 1970's karts were much lighter so it would be a lot easier than now.

A small trailer is probably your best bet.

Cheers,

You'll need to make sure the roof rack is OK to handle 200+lbs as well.

2007 Toyota Tacoma access cab. Kart goes in the bed, bumpers and tools go in the passenger seat, back seat and where ever else it will fit.

No lifting required! The 2x4's are used as ramps. The Grandsons kart is in the bed 'cause it's heavier...

I got a 2dr. golf, I measured the inside at it tightest point and I got 44in I believe. (I can verify) did not have a chance to to the length.

But I was thinking what if I take the side body pieces (what are they called?) and the wheels maybe it will fit.

It would only take 15 minutes or less to get it all taken down. I do not have any idea how the side body goes on the kart but I think its held by a spring?

If anyone's got picture that would be great.
My other option about be to take the part apart the same way and see if I can put it on a roof rack ?

I am talking about an adult kart with a 125cc honda. (by the way how heavy are these things?)

Cesar,
Although you might be able to fit a kart in the back of the Golf, you won't be able to fit much else and it won't be easy. I'd recommend getting a hitch for the Golf and a small trailer like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/870-lb-capacity-40-inch-x-49-inch-heavy-duty-utility-trailer-with-8-inch-wheels-and-tires-42708.html

The Golf will have no troubles pulling it and you'll have room for all the other gear you need when karting (tools, spares, helmet, suit, etc).

I used one like that behind a Mini Cooper and it worked very well.

Rob is right. I have A Dodge Caliber and I pull this trailer:

http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/trailer-accessories/1195-lb-capacity-48-inch-x-96-inch-heavy-duty-foldable-utility-trailer-with-12-inch-wheels-90154.html

$240.00 with the 20% off cupon they have. Wink and the best thing is that it folds and you can stand it up against the wall so it doesn't take any space.

I can fit the Kart and the Stand with no problems and leaves plenty of room in the car to haul all the other stuff. I think it was actually more expensive to get the Hitch stuff. but that is because I got the one from the dealer and not a generic one.

and you guys just put some plywood on it...
how do you fasten the kart?

BTW, I am still trying to learn how much does a chassis weight without motor and wheels and then how much does a motor weight or add to that?

I have such a dilemma. I live in an apt at the moment... (I will get a house this year) and have already bought a chassis. The track charges 120.00 mo to store the kart. Plus gas etc. So I want to be able to bring my kart back and forth on Saturdays or other day they open the track for practice.

the biggest problem is going to be getting the kart in an out of the apt. and before that up a flight of stairs.

Typical shifter will weigh in the region of 190-210lbs. Pulling motor off will probably shave 40-50lbs or so.

GMC Envoy XL will fit whole kart with one sidepod and rear tires removed. You can keep it in car until you buy house.
The newest Envoy is 2006, so you can find them cheap.

My Envoy is also pulling enclosed 6x10 vnose. 12mpg with trailer, 19 without.
