CLARIFICATION: While our painted pipe was legal for the club and the regionals, I have since found out that it is NOT legal for the upcoming Canadian Championships based on the following Rotax Max rules:
9. ANYTHING WHICH IS NOT EXPRESSILY ALLOWED IN TECHNICAL REGULATIONS IS FORBIDDEN.
20.1 Must be supplied by BRP-POWERTRAIN and cannot be modified except for the replacement of the silencer absorption material and the use of threaded fasteners in place of the rivets for securing the silencer end cap.

| thanks anthony im a fellow canadian racer , and this is what i was trying to figure out if it was legal for nationals or not club racing i dont think there going to be to picky about it at 3s and goodwood and such but i figured in the EKC they may have a problem with it |

Painting is not a modification it was painted when manufactured so it's nothing more than maintenance it has no effect on performance a little common sense needs to be applied here.
If you de grease and sand it down to remove any loose coating a good flat black header paint will make a nice job. They must be cured by heating and cooling after aplication.

I designed and built pipes for something like 20 years. Are you saying I don't know what I'm talking about?
Anything that effects the tempurature in the pipe is going to effect it's performance.

The topic of this thread isn't wether or not you know what your talking about. If it were I wouldn't comment because I don't know you and wouldn't have any way of knowing the extent of your knowledge. Getting back to the topic I can well understand how a ceramic coating or heat blanket might effect performance. I don't believe that a thin layer of paint would. For the moment lets assume your correct in thinking that even a thin layer of paint has an effect on performance. If that's the case and the system was painted when manufactured and that original paint is now deteriorating then wouldn't the system have to be re painted to operate at the original spec and performance level?
Again I don't think it means a thing and I can't see how anyone would ever know it was re painted unless it was done with some kind of insulting coating. My opinion is based only on logic and I make no claims to have any expertise on the subject.

| I believe from what I've read in the rules that painting the pipe is illegal. Maybe its a way of hiding modifications to the pipe???????? |
